Well, if you haven’t today isn’t the day.

Located on the border between Silver Lake and Los Feliz, Rowena Reservoir is a park right out of a fairy tale; palm tree lined pathways, freshly mulched shrubs, and posted signs warning to not feed the ducks.

Originally part of the extensive reservoir system in Silver Lake, which includes both Silver Lake and Ivanhoe Reservoirs, Rowena was a 31 million gallon reservoir, which at one time, supplied the city with water.

After months of negotiation, in December 1991, LADWP and local residents agreed on a plan to replace the reservoir with a camouflaged tank after it was initially drained, rather than to refill it.

10 years later, as of July 19, 2001, LADWP opened the new Rowena Reservoir pond for a brief tour of facilities which featured a new 10 million-gallon underground storage tank that cost $14 Million.

Thanks to Take Sunset, for this great aerial shot of how the Rowena Reservoir used to look like:

Today, unfortunately the Rowena Reservoir looks different:

In August 2011, LADWP drained the lake, much like they did at the Echo Park Lake.

And, according to the posted signs encircling the reservoir:

Rowena Reservoir Lake is undergoing maintenance to address algae growth and sediment buildup. The pond is a water feature and does not contain potable water. These repairs will not impact LADWP water service or water quality.

LADWP crews will drain the pond to remove the algae and sediment from the bottom of the pond. While the pond is drained, LADWP will also repair cracks in the concrete liner and make improvements to the pond’s filtration system. The pond will be refilled once repairs are completed in September 2011.

Well, they’ve missed deadline because it’s now October 20th 2011, and the water is yet to be restored.

Another troublesome issue which remains is that even though the pathways are pristine and well kept up; LADWP in its wisdom finally finishes the refill the pond–to be restored to its original beauty.

But now there’s a large green fence that currently surrounds the entire pond, along with no public access.

To state the facts, the LADWP spent all of the original $14 million, plus up-keep, including its draining — and people still aren’t able to enjoy the Rowena Reservoir.

Why?

From my research, it appears that the problem is two-fold:

First, according to Curbed LA, said there is some high voltage electrical equipment around the site that will have to be removed, and second, there’s the legitimate worry–about keeping out bathers.

So until a solution is found, the public has no choice but to wait for the completion of the Rowena Reservoir restoration — until then, it doesn’t look to to be a pressing matter for the LADWP; but it’s one for the people who would like to frequent Rowena Reservoir pond.

Lastly it is indeed a tending matter and needs immediate attention — it’s a crying shame that the water around it is still missing.

Although a little off the beaten path, Paramount Ranch is total Hollywood in a natural setting. However, that may sound like a little bit of an oxymoron.

I know, when you think about Hollywood, getting into the great outdoors isn’t the first thing to come to mind. But, if you dig a little deeper–all Western movies need a wide open expanse, an old town, and maybe a house or two.

That’s how, why, and where Paramount Ranch becomes important to our indigenous film locations for Los Angeles.

Paramount Pictures needed such a place, so in 1927 they purchased 2,700 acres of the old Rancho Las Virgenes to use as a “movie ranch.” For the next 25 years, a genuine Who’s Who of Hollywood spent time at the Ranch including Cecil B. Demille, Bob Hope, Gary Cooper, and Claudette Colbert.

Therefore, Paramount Ranch became colonial Massachusetts for the movie The Maid of Salem, ancient China in The Adventures of Marco Polo, a South Seas island in Ebb Tide a movie lot for numerous western locations including San Francisco in Wells Fargo.

Who knew Malibu could be so versatile.

Subsequently in 1953, William Hertz, a big fan of Western movies and a former chairman of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, bought the southeast portion of the Ranch.

Using Paramount’s old prop storage sheds, Hertz built a Western Town, which television companies started using. Such productions as The Cisco Kid, and Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theater started filming on the property.

Afterwards, Hertz sold the property in 1955–subsequently its ownership changed hands many times until 1980 when the National Parks Service bought it, however filming never stopped.

In fact, if you remember a series from the 1990s entitled Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, you might feel right at home at the Paramount Ranch.

From 1992 to 1997, most of the filming for the series was located here; plus, one of the current hiking trails, the Hacienda Trail, takes you past the homestead that was built for main character of the series.

If you’re curious what and why the cracked and decaying roadway that traverses the Park is, it used to be the famous Paramount Racetrack.

Only open for 18 months, it became world famous due to its unique design, which ultimately caused its demise. Just short of two miles in length, the race track was featured in The Devil’s Hairpin, filmed in 1957.

Today, if you’re into hiking, Paramount Ranch is a wonderful out of the way spot to visit. They have several picnic tables just waiting for you to use. Its Western Town is open from 8:00am until sunset every day. As I was walking around, I thought about Debi over at Go Explore Nature, and how much her boys would love this place.

So, if you’re a lover of fresh mountain air, head to Paramount Ranch. It’s located in the Santa Monica Mountains at 2903 Cornell Road, in Agoura Hills.

See you on the trails! (Click for a PDF featuring a trails map.)

The Hollywood Tower is located on Franklin Avenue, in Hollywood, of course. It’s a star-studded legendary apartment building and a Los Angeles landmark.

In its heyday, the Hollywood Tower, had no shortage of Hollywood’s Royalty among its residents–including such Hollywood entertainers as Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, and Humphrey Bogart. Today, it stands as a reminder of the grandeur that Hollywood once was, and still can be, just behind its doors.

Originally known as La Belle Tour, this V-shaped building was designed by architects Cramer & Wise in a faux French Normandy style and was built in 1929.

When it was first built, the Hollywood Tower had more than 50 apartments, three penthouse suites, a subterranean garage, and public roof gardens. Due to its close location to the Hollywood studios, the Tower became a favorite place of residence for entertainment professionals.

Hollywood historian and one of the founders of the Hollywood Heritage Museum, Marc Wanamaker–had the following to say about the Hollywood Tower:

It has been a major landmark since it was built. Even before the freeway, it was a landmark on that hill. Source: LA Times

As with so many buildings in the LA area, the Hollywood Tower, which is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, fell into disrepair during the 1970s and 80s, but in 2007, Alliance Residential Company bought the building for a reported $34.5 million dollars, with the promise of renovating the current units, plus building an adjacent 146 units.

And that’s exactly what happened.

In April 2010, the LaBelle opened.

If you get the chance to pass by and look at this magnificent icon of our city’s history, take a few minutes to enjoy cinematic history next to modern Hollywood. It’s a treat and it’s not often that the people who frequented and lived here were as much of what made this building famous, as the building itself.

Tomorrow, West Hollywood will be treating its own, and all others of the general public who are interested, to visit the official unveiling of their newest public art sculptures.

They’re located on Santa Monica Boulevard, between Doheny Drive and Almont Drive.

When all is said and done, there will be seven large-scale public art sculptures on display for the general public through June 2012.

(So don’t worry if you cannot attend the official unveiling; you’ll have about another year to stop by West Hollywood to check out this extraordinary urban art display).

This stretch of park median has been home to a previous art installation featuring Peter Shire’s large-scale art works.

No one knows what will happen this weekend due to the closure of the 405; but one thing that is probable–the roads leading to and from the Valley, other than the 405, will all see an increase in traffic.

In the case of this highway, drivers will definitely enjoy driving Kanan Dune Road in Malibu all the way to Interstate 101.

A few days ago, I found myself on the Westside and needed to get to Agoura Hills. Remembering the road that I traveled to get to Newton Falls, I thought about Kanan Dune, which snakes all the way from PCH to the 101.

And I was right.

Recently resurfaced, driving Kanan Dune Drive road is a blast.

And because it’s summertime, be happy that you won’t have to battle snow on the ground as you battle the physical and other environmental elements as you travel on Kanan Dune:

So, if you’re interested in traveling this route, either by car or bike, I highly recommend it; but if you can’t, I’m more than happy to share a few photos I snapped of this iconic road:

There’s several other roads that lead from Malibu to the Valley, including Malibu Canyon Road. So knowing these alternate routes should prove valuable, since they all provide similar views, making it a tad more important to know your options during this weekend’s car duress. So it’s worth the time to explore your alternate routes.

Although Los Angeles isn’t particularly known for our long history, the LA Office of Historic Resources, would have you think otherwise, and rightfully so. The plain fact is that we’re a relatively new city.

Even so, between April and June of 2011, nine additional structures have been added to our expanding list of iconic Historic-Cultural Monuments.

For every building that’s listed, a story of that building’s unique genesis, development & design, architects, materials, or even the artists who participated in its creation, all tell a tale.

On June 1st, the Historic-Cultural Monuments list passed a milestone:

By adding its 1000th entry, after nearly a half-century of historic designations through its historic preservation program:

Congratulations, Los Angeles!

Without further ado, here’s the list (PDF):

HCM #994: Arsenberg-Stendahl Home Gallery

This property in the Hollywood Hills was built in 1920 for Lee B. Menefee, and designed by architect William Lee Woollett, who also designed other significant Los Angeles buildings, including Broadway’s Million Dollar Theatre; the two-story residential building is an example of Mediterranean Revival architecture with Mid-Century Modern additions. Purchased in 1927 by major art collectors Walter C. Arensberg and his wife Louis Stevens, the property was sold in 1954 to Earl L Stendahl, who used it as an art gallery. It continues to function as a gallery space today.

HCM #995: 9027 West Alden Drive Apartments

Situated on the northwest corner of Alden and Wetherly Drive near the Beverly Center, this two-story apartment building houses four residential units. Built in 1931, the building is an excellent example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style with its flat red tile roof, hacienda plan, stucco walls, decorative tiles, and wood balconies that accompany its open spindle work.

HCM #996: Garden of Oz

Begun in 1991 in the Hollywoodland area, this landscape garden area created by Gail Cottman is a unique folk art environment comprised of outdoor public art from over 75 local artists.

The property has a decorative wrought-iron front gate and uses a large amount of statuary and found objects. Initially developed to house an expanding rose garden; subsequently the landscape evolved into a tile and sculpture garden inspired by the “Wizard of Oz,” and now functions as a children’s folk art and peace garden.

HCM #997: Clifford E. Clinton Residence

Built in 1928 in Los Feliz, this two-story single family residence exhibits features of the Spanish Colonial Revival style, with multi-level side-gabled roofs covered in red Mission tile, iron grills and a decorative painted door at its front entrance.

Until 1949, the property was owned by Clifford E. Clinton, the owner of the famed Clifton Cafeterias chain and a noted leader in Los Angeles civic reform movements. Clinton led the recall of Mayor Frank Shaw in 1938; during this period, a bomb was placed in the basement of the home, which damaged the kitchen but left Clinton and his family unharmed.

HCM #998: Boettcher House

This two-story single family residence in Los Aneles’West Adams’ Central Arlington Heights neighborhood, and was was built in 1905-1906 as a winter residence for Charles Boettcher, a noted businessman based in Colorado. The property is an example of Craftsman style architecture that was designed using the Radford Architectural Company catalog. Some of its character-defining features include gabled roofs, clapboard siding, wood trim, box beamed interior ceilings and built-in cabinetry.

HCM #999: Marsh Duplex

Located in Hancock Park, this Mediterranean Revival style residential duplex building was built by contractor Edward Goralsky in 1928, for Margarete Mae Marsh.

The property exhibits a high level of sophisticated architectural designs and detailing, including a slightly pitched side-gabled roof covered in red Mission tile and multi-light arched casement windows on its front elevation.

HCM #1000: Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company Home Office

Built in 1949, this six-story commercial building, located at 1999 W. Adams Boulevard in West Adams, was designed in the Late Moderne style by architect Paul R. Williams (1894-1980).

Williams was the first certified African-American architect west of the Mississippi River, the first African-American member of the American Institute of Architects, and also served on the first Los Angeles Planning Commission in 1920. There are also several murals located inside the building, which were designed to suit the building.

HCM #1001: May Company Garage

The Beaux-Arts style nine-story parking garage and retail building at 9th and Hill Streets in downtown Los Angeles, was built in 1927 and was one of the first of its kind to be constructed in the city at a time when the auto culture was booming. The building included retail stores located along its street frontage, and was designed by Claude Beelman and William Curlett, who were responsible for the designs of several other Historic-Cultural Monuments here, including the Park Plaza Hotel and the Barker Brothers Building.

HCM #1002: Gertrude and Harry Kaye Building/Hannah Schwartz Apartments

This property has contains features of the International Style and Streamline Moderne–and was one of the few privately-owned multi-family apartment buildings designed by notable Los Angeles architect Paul R. Williams, the first African-American architect admitted to the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

If you live in the LA area, then you probably know about Metro, our local mass transportation service.

But, if you didn’t know there is a series of local interconnected mass transit trains that service much of Southern California.

It’s called Metrolink, and it serves 6 SoCal counties:

Los Angeles County
Orange County
Riverside County
San Bernardino County
San Diego County
Ventura County

Here’s a map to give you a better picture of all its various stops:

If you haven’t tried Metrolink yet, now’s a great time. As of July 1st, you can now purchase a Metrolink Weekend Pass for a $10 bargain price–which in these tough times is a pretty good deal.

So, now for a sawbuck, from Friday night at 7:00pm until midnight Sunday, you can ride as many Metrolink trains as you wish. Plus, the $10 Weekend Pass includes free transfers to connect to rail or bus.

And what better weekend to try Metrolink than during this weekend’s upcoming ‘Carmaggedon“

Metrolink is adding service to its regularly-scheduled weekend service on its Antelope Valley Line, plus 9 additional trains will be added to serve those traveling from the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys.

In addition, Metrolink’s website, with interactive mapping and schedule times, is a great resource to plan your trip.

What a great and affordable way to discover all of the different sides of SoCal!!

Before I decided what I wanted to cook for the 4th of July; in the early morning, I drove to one of my favorite specialty and gourmet stores–in the Valley! Just thinking about going over the 405 in the middle of the day will make a grown man squeamish–but as they say; That’s life!

Well, one of my reasons for going yesterday was because it was the 4th of July, I assumed that the drive would not be bumper-to-bumper.

And my unscientific hunch was correct!

Via Google Maps, I discovered

0

traffic.

That’s right, zip, zero, nada.

A totally unique and unusual phenomenon here in Los Angeles

So, to take full advantage of the lack of traffic, and to drive the dreaded route of the upcoming Carmageddon, I drove to the oft scorned route to the Valley.

My goal?

To get my favorite pizza sauce; Don Pepino!.

I’ve looked for this sauce all over my neighborhood supermarkets, but it was nowhere to be found; but a quick search on Google brought up the name of Cambridge Farms in Valley Village.

Billed as the “Largest Kosher Supermarket in California,” this grocery store has so many, products packed neatly on each shelf.

From olives to beans to spices, plus a full deli and wine section, you can find everything you need for your breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Now, I’m not one to talk too much about grocery stores, but if you’re in the area of North Hollywood and haven’t tried this market, you should.

I bought 6 cans of my FAV pizza sauce, plus several other items, but when the sauce runs out; I’ll be back for more, even though I don’t get to the Valley very often.

In the same genre as the old Brown Derby on Wilshire Boulevard, the Idle Hour Café is a prime example of Programmatic architecture, characterized by constructions in the forms of objects not normally associated with buildings; such as characters, animals, people or household objects.

That’s right; Idle Hour Café is shaped, quite appropriately, like a keg. In fact, the one of its kind in Los Angeles.

Located at 4824 North Vineland Avenue in North Hollywood and constructed in 1941, the restaurant was originally owned by Michael D. Connolly, a film technician and built by engineer George F. Fordyk. What is more surprising than the idea that the building is shaped like a keg, but that the interior also follows this design, featuring “a barrel-shaped wood backbar, barrel shape of curved walls and finishes, and stained glass windows with barrel designs and diamond patterns.”

For more about the story of this unique building, here’s an excerpt from Chris Nichols’, a Los Angeles Magazine Associate Editor, Recommendation Report with the LA Cultural Heritage Commission:

Serving as a tap room and café named the “Idle Hour Café,” Connolly and his wife Irene lived in a second-story apartment built into the head of the barrel section. After divorcing, Irene ran the café until the 1960s, after which it was renamed “Rudy’s Keg.” In 1971, the building was purchased by Jose and Dolores Fernandez and reopened as a flamenco dinner theater called “La Caña.” The restaurant closed in 1984 and Dolores continued living in the second-floor apartment until 2009. Source: Los Angeles Department of City Planning RECOMMENDATION REPORT (PDF)

Even though, in 2010, the Idle Hour Café was declared Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #977 this building isn’t being used and has fallen into disrepair. But, you can still see what was, and the possibility of what could be again.

Recently I wrote an article about Tapatío Hot Sauce commemorating their 40th Anniversary. So, what better way to celebrate that fact than by actually using it in a recipe–relax everyone; it’s not very difficult!

For sure, Tapatío is a wonderful ingredient that’s used to spice up most ordinary foods that need a little spark–e.g. scrambled eggs or that extra piece of chicken which is left on your dinner plate, etc. BTW it’s also great as a standard ingredient for most households, especially here in Los Angeles!

As the way of a disclosure–I’m not an expert chef, but I will say I’m an expert cook; although my partner might argue otherwise. But, what I do know is that at the end of each meal, he cleans his plate all the way to the shiny parts. My specialty lies in the art of taking basic ingredients that I have in my cupboard/pantry and making them into something that adds that extra “it fact for my meals a little extra “zing” for my kitchen table.

So, in that vein, here’s my tasty version of a Mexican classic,

Huevos Rancheros

4 tortillas
1 T. Canola oil
½ C. refried beans
2 tsp. Tapatío
3 eggs
½ C. pico de gallo
½ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. black pepper
Fresh cilantro for garnish

Serves 2

1. If you have a non-stick pan, just heat the tortillas. If not, put a small amount of canola oil in and heat them. Put them on the plate.

2. In a small pan, or using the microwave, take the refried beans and add the Tapatío. Stir and heat.

3. While the refried beans are heating up, put the canola oil in a pan, heat, then add the eggs and pico de gallo. Cook until the eggs are done.

4. Put 2 tortillas on a plate; spread a layer ½ of the refried beans, then a layer of half of the egg mixture, top with fresh cilantro.

That’s it.

Oh, of course, if you’d like the dish a bit spicier, add more Tapatío to it.

Another variation to this recipe is to spice up the refried beans a bit. Use garlic, onion, cumin, or chili powder. All of these will give a little more flavor.

What’s my recipe for Pico de Gallo?

I’m so glad you asked.

3 small tomatoes, diced
1 onion, finely chopped
1 fresh jalapeno pepper, finely chopped (If you don’t want too much heat, take out the seeds.)
¼ C. fresh cilantro, finely chopped
½ tsp. garlic powder
⅛ tsp. salt
⅛ tsp. pepper
Juice from one lime

1. After you cut the tomatoes, drain the juice in a colander.

2. Mix all the ingredients together and gently stir.

Oh, so good.

<For many who live and drive in Los Angeles, they're preparing for the end of the world as we know it.

There’s only 15 days left until the either dreaded–or welcomed–closure of the Interstate 405 is going to happen, depending on your perspective.

Predictions for that weekend range from the end of the world as we know it; or there will be a significant increase in the number of people getting tattoos, again depending on who you listen to.

Speaking of that, I found a few funny, serious, and just good ole’ hilarious videos that are featuring LA’s upcoming Interstate 405 freeway closure.

I thought I’d share the top 6 with you:

Truth or Fiction–you decide!

And a few laughs in the meantime.

Just as many people that now live in Los Angeles are not from here, I too am not a California native; although I consider Southern California home.

I’m a East Coast transplant having moved here about four years ago–and to my delight—there’s not one day that goes by that I don’t discover a new intriguing sight, sound, person, place and exciting story to share about Los Angeles and Southern California.

From the Hollywood Walk of Fame; to walking the Hollywood Hills; or visiting our world famous beaches; the beauty of the the new hip renasaince of Venice; and to the art and bohemian gentrification of Boyle Heights, there’s so much to do and go–the list never stops.

But, as far as food goes, one of my favorite local discoveries has been Tapatío.

Exciting news:

This year, Tapatío is celebrating its 40th Anniversary!

Starting in 1971, by Mr. Jose-Luis Saavedra–while still working his day job peddled his hot sauce at local markets. Having confidence in his recipe, he often left his hot sauce at the markets on consignment, so if it didn’t sell, Mr. Saavedra wouldn’t get paid.

Although the first five years were difficult, the risk paid off and the company grew.

Its first manufacturing plant, which was located in Maywood, was only 750 square feet, but in 1985, they moved to a 8,500 square foot plant.

However Jose-Luis Saavedra didn’t stop there:

Still growing, and now with three of his children also working for the company, in 1996, Mr. Saavedra, who was unable to find the perfect fit for his company boldly purchased his own parcel of land, and custom built a state-of-the-art 30,000 square foot facility.

Over the years, the size of the containers Tapatío is available in has also increased. Having starting with only a 5oz. container–today, you can purchase Tapatío in individual packets, or up to gallon sizes!

My personal choice is the 32oz. bottle, which right now sits in my pantry closet, half empty.

So, if you haven’t tried Tapatío yet, I suggest that you go to your favorite local grocery store and purchase a bottle–you won’t regret it.

And if you don’t live in the area, or if your local store doesn’t carry Tapatío, you can purchase it right off their website.

So in honor of Tapatío’s 40th Anniversary, and with the 4th of July arriving soon–be sure to have some to spice up your food as we celebrate our nation’s Declaration of Independence!

Lighting fireworks on the 4th of July is one of the our nation’s oldest traditions–first taking place in 1777.

Subsequently, July 4th firework shows both in Los Angeles and across the country, is a tradition with both small and large demonstrations.

For me, personally, the 4th of July, invokes many memories.

For those that may not know me or have heard anything, I grew up in a small town in Ohio. It represented–and stood for–the archetypical experience which celebrated our nation’s Declaration of Independence–which included family picnics, pie eating contests, and of course, spreading out the lawn chairs to watch the fireworks!

In other words, what was and remains a major part of history, became both unique to all Americans, no matter where they live.

Later, when I was living in Washington DC, I was privileged to watch the “Grandaddy” of em’ all July 4th festivals at the Capital Mall. I was lucky to experience nd enjoy both the grandeur of the big city festivities, along with my fondest memories from my charming hometown.

Here in LA, we have it all. Small to gigantic fireworks displays–from LA Memorial Coliseum’s Exposition Park to Norwalk.

Many traditional local events have been discontinued, unfortunately, due to budgetary issues. Be that as it may, here’s a list of all the best Places in LA to Watch the July 4th Fireworks–another great bonus, is that many of the shows are free, so if you’re lucky–you just might find a free parking space also to enjoy LA’s July 4th Fireworks!

When in Lincoln Park up in its Heights section of Los Angeles and you want to eat one of the good burgers of LA, Dino’s in Lincoln Heights is in serious competition for best burger category.

What better way to cap off a day of walking and sightseeing then enjoying a juicy burger.

So off I went to Dino’s Burgers.

Dino’s doesn’t just serve burgers. In fact, their chicken and breakfast items are superb as well–but since I’m in pursuit of Los Angeles’ best burgers, when given the opportunity, I can–and eat–a good burger anytime, so that’s what I had.

At Dino’s Burgers, their home-made hamburgers are delicious, very filling and satisfying. They add their own brand of “secret sauce,” in lieu of ketchup, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The fries were hot and crisp, just the way I like them. Add a little salt–and you’re in a bit of heaven.

At Dino’s, they cook their burgers for you right on the grill. When I arrived the inside was full; and when I left, the indoor and outdoor dining area was full.

It isn’t often that a musician is honored by the state where they were born. But, that’s exactly what happened on May 28th, 2011.

On that day, Michigan’s Governor, Rick Snyder, announced it was Bob Seger Day celebrating more than 50 years as a rock and roll musician, singer, songwriter and Michigan native.

Regardless, one may legitimately ask what does this have to do with Travelin’ Local, a primarily Los Angeles and Southern California based magazine?

Because of his beautiful and emotional ode to our city via his song Hollywood Nights, a Bob Seger classic:

With a career spanning over 4 decades, Bob Segers’s music, which often tells a story, remains as popular today as it did when it was first introduced.

Born in 1945, Seger started playing music as early as the 1960s, but never found what he was looking for until he founded the Silver Bullet Band.

It’s a classic tale of working hard to obtain your goals, so when, in 1976, he and the Band achieved national attention with the release of Live Bullet, a double-vinyl-record set, which stayed on the Billboard charts for 168 weeks, peaking at #34, and eventually reached 5x Platinum status and is one of the Top 10 selling live albums of all time.

Over the next several years, Seger would record 5 more albums, each with hit songs of their own, and amazingly, the movies and television have brought Seger’s songs even more attention. Featured in the movie, Risky Business, with Tom Cruise singing in his underwear, “Old Time Rock and Roll” remains a classic movie meets music moment.

Later, Seger’s song, “Like a Rock,” is associated with Chevrolet, something Seger chose to do to help support the struggling American automobile workers in his native Detroit.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on March 15, 2004, Segar continues to sing and write music to the present.

In that vein, let’s sit back and rock out to Seger’s unique brand of Rock and Roll.

Although the sign says, “Fabulous Charbroiled Burgers,” when deciding to eat here, I was in pursuit of one sole purpose.

To try their locally famous serving of Chili Cheese Fries.

Believe it or not, to date I’ve never eaten chili cheese fries, so as I became more and more aware of them naturally my curiosity was piqued.

Well, after eating my Chili Cheese Fries at Fabulous Charbroiled Burgers, my verdict is in–if you’re hungry for French fries loaded with cheddar cheese, with a layer of rich chili underneath, then you’ve got to come here.

From the outside, this small local restaurant, located in at the corner of Rosecrans Boulevard and Lemonoli Avenue, looks like a dive, and if truth be told, but once inside the employees were gracious and the patrons were coming in non-stop.

Classic booths line the walls, old fashioned vending machines can be found in the corner, along with a long counter where you pick up your food reminds you of days long past.

As soon as you take a bit of their extremely generous portions, your attention is solely focused down on your plate as you eat your meal and savor and enjoy it.

Next time I return, I’m going to try the rest of their menu, especially their charbroiled hamburgers–plus, they also serve breakfast, Mexican fare, and sandwiches!

Starting on July 1st, 2011, for anyone who shops in the unincorporated section of Los Angeles County, if you don’t have a reusable bag with you to put your groceries in, you’ll be charged $.10 for a paper one because plastic bags will no longer be available.

It’s all part of the new law that was recently adopted by the the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, November 16th, 2010:

This ordinance amends Title 12 – Environmental Protection of the Los Angeles County Code, by adding a Chapter regulating the use of plastic carryout bags and recyclable paper carryout bags, in promote both the habit and use of reusable bags within the County’s unincorporated areas.

Pursuant to the new Law, plastic carryout bags, as defined, may no longer be distributed by affected stores and a 10 cent ($0.10) charge for each recyclable paper carryout bag distributed by those stores will apply.

On July 1st, only “large” stores or stores with a pharmacy are affected; but as usual, it comes with a caveat that come January 1st, 2012, “small” stores will have to follow the same policy.

If you’d like to see if a store near you will be affected the new law, here’s a map of the 82 large stores (click here for a larger view (PDF):

In case you have a few questions, “About the Bag”, which is sponsored by County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works has answered them for you:

Are reusable bags recyclable? Where can I bring them to be recycled? Depending on the material, it may be recyclable. Visit Earth911.com for more information on recycling locations.

Can I use my own carryout bag? Yes

What can I use as a carryout bag? Anything you can safely carry your groceries with, including: reusable bags, backpacks, baskets, buckets, and boxes, for example.

What if I don’t want to buy/bring a reusable bag or purchase a paper bag? If you can comfortably carry your paid purchases out by hand or in your purse/backpack, that is one option; or you can repackage your goods into a shopping cart or basket and unload them directly into your vehicle (and then return the cart or basket).

Is there a place where low income people can buy discounted reusable bags? Public Works distributes free reusable bags in limited quantities at various community events throughout the County. Please visit the Events table periodically for the latest events info. In addition, please see response to "Does the 10-cent charge per paper bag apply to everyone? Who is exempt?

Won’t buying all these paper and reusable bags be a burden on me and my family during these hard economic times? Based on the Socio Economic Study [PDF, 271KB] done as a part of the Environmental Impact Report [PDF, 49MB], the estimated increase in overall cost due to this ordinance is $5.72 per capita annually. This includes stores switching from plastic bags to paper bags (the cost of "free bags" are normally hidden and passed on to consumers); customers buying more trash bin liners; and increased sales tax incurred from the new purchases. However, potential savings or added value to customers, in the form of reduced taxes for litter abatement, increased property values, and the value of other environmental benefits associated with the proposed ordinance were not calculated in this study.

Are reusable bags recyclable? Where can I bring them to be recycled? Depending on the material, it may be recyclable. Visit Earth911.com for more information on recycling locations.

What is the 10-cent charge used for? All monies collected by a store from this Ordinance will be retained by the store and may be used for compliance with the Ordinance.

Does the 10-cent charge per paper bag apply to everyone? Who is exempt? All affected stores authorized to accept WIC or SNAP purchase payments must provide at the point of sale, free of charge, either reusable bags or recyclable paper carryout bags or both, at the store’s option, to any customer participating either in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) or in the CalFresh/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Is the 10-cent charge per paper bag taxable? Yes, initial discussions with the Board of Equalization indicate that the 10-cent charge on paper bags would be subject to State sales tax.

Plus, if you don’t own any reusable bags, several events are planned where you can get one, for FREE:

This is a bold move by a body that’s traditionally known for its timidity, therefore its sustainability factor shouldn’t be underestimated, and in due time, the City of LA will no doubt do the same.

I’m really looking forward to finding out the environmental impact of the ban–if it does prove to reduce the amount of un-recyclable trash, which its should, we’ll see this trend be nature’s friend in and around LA.

One of the nation’s busiest freeway’s, Interstate 405, is slated to close to decrease its congestion via necessary construction for about 53 hours.

Although, some might find it silly that such a matter would and may cause mayhem, they do not comprehend nor understand the congestion, traffic, and incompressible difficulties of driving on the Freeways in LA.

In a nut shell, the 405 is the main North-South Freeway here, besides the inland Interstate 5, that allows us to travel north and south.

Be that as it may, the term a “New York Minute,” can be equally applied to and with Los Angeles’ “I got to go where I need to go right now.” Without a doubt, many of our workforce in and around LA, especially inside the valley, use the 405 for going to work, play, and other sundry habits.

<Guess what--take it or leave it--the closure of the 405 for about a day is the best thing that may ever happen for your daily commutes, so do not fight it.

To that end, Travelin’ Local now has a new small icon on our right toolbar counting down the days until the 405 shutdown.

It’s the countdown clock for the closure of the 405.

That’s right. You heard correctly.

The specific freeway closure boundaries are as follows:

Northbound I-405: 10-mile closure between I-10 and U.S. 101

Southbound I-405: 4-mile closure between U.S. 101 and Getty Center Drive Ramps

As part of the lane widening project, on July 16th – 17th, and from as early as 7:00pm on July 15th for some ramps, the 405 will be closing. All ramps will be closed by midnight and they won’t reopen until 5:00am on July 18th.

Get the Countdown Creator Pro widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! Not seeing a widget? (More info)

That’s 53 hours of closure.

So, what can you do?

It’s simple. Stay home, or if you have to go out, plan ahead.

If you’re thinking about using Sepulveda Boulevard, think again–it will only be reserved for residents.

Personally, I’m kind of looking forward to the event, because it’s a way to be semi-free of the freeways for a day +, and look forward for something to do in my own backyard.

To be sure there are many people who live in the Valley and need to get to work on the Westside. Maybe this is a chance to have a small “Staycation.” To that end, we recommend finding a hotel along the beach–or inside LA proper–and spend the night here, instead of trying to traverse a closed freeway, to only find grief, aggravation, and anger.

Better yet, plan a short weekend getaway. SoCal is loaded with possibilities. Why not go to Palm Springs, San Diego, La Jolla, Laguna Beach or even a hotel here in town?

What better way to spend a weekend than relaxing by the beach or pool, not even thinking about the freeways and traffic jams.

You still have over a month to plan, so let’s get started!

And by the way, they’ll be closing the 405 again next year, so consider this year a dry run.

If you were alive during the early 1970s, you have heard the music of the brother/sister team better known as the Carpenters, who were born in Connecticut, but moved to Downey CA in 1963. In fact, the Carpenters had three #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen #1 hits on the Adult Contemporary.

In addition, they had twelve top 10 singles (including their #1 hits). To date, Carpenters’ album and single sales total more than 100 million units.

Amazingly, it was another musician, Herb Alpert, who saw and heard the magic of Richard and Karen’s demo tapes and on April 22nd, 1969, they signed with A&M Records.

During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 11 albums, five of which contained top 10 singles (Close to You, Carpenters, A Song for You, Now & Then and Horizon), thirty-one singles, five television specials, and one short-lived television series.

As became apparent, Karen’s voice became recognized as unique and superior in its range and appealibility, such began the rise of the brother and sister group into superstardom.

Unfortunately, their recording career was cut short with Karen’s death in 1983 from cardiac arrest following complications of anorexia nervosa. Extensive news coverage of the circumstances surrounding her death increased public awareness of the consequences of eating disorders.

Back then, anorexia nervosa was considered something of a novelty, but as time has shown, it’s both a serious disease as well as a severe mental and psychological problem for those affected.

Close to You and We’ve Only Just Begun became RIAA Certified Gold Singles and were featured on the best-selling album Close To You, which is placed #175 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Recorded by Dionne Warwick some seven years earlier, (They Long to Be) Close to You, by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, was transformed in the studio by the Carpenters in 1970. The duo’s version became one of pop music’s seminal demonstrations of boy/girl harmony and the "easy listening" sound.

It featured an understated piano arrangement by Richard, as well as first-rate production by Jack Daugherty. Listener approval for Close to You was overwhelming, and the song soared to Number One.

It was soon followed by the hit We’ve Only Just Begun, which, according to the Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music, "highlighted Karen’s crystal-clear diction, over laden with intricate harmonies and a faultless production."

Thus began the Carpenters’ incredible hit parade, which landed 20 of their songs in the Top 40 during the next 11 years.

From 1970 to 1972 alone, the Carpenters generated six Top Five hits- -Close to You, We’ve Only Just Begun, For All We Know, Rainy Days and Mondays, Superstar, and Hurting Each Other.

Along with Richard’s arranging and musical direction, much of this success was due to the high quality of material the Carpenters were getting from songwriters such as Bacharach, Paul Williams, and Roger Nichols.

As a result of this output, the group’s compilation album, the Singles 1969-73, became one of the best-selling albums of all time and was on the LP charts for an amazing 115 weeks.

Later, Richard and his wife, honored Richard’s sister and their combined legacy, by dedicating the Richard and Karen Performing Arts Center at Cal State Long Beach.

Built in 1994, the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center is a 1,074-seat theatre located on the campus of California State University, Long Beach. The stage area was modeled after the David H. Koch Theater (formerly the New York State Theater) at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and can accommodate large or small performing ensembles, film screenings, concerts, conferences and other special events.
