Recently, I was fortunate to meet up with a local guy here, DeAngelo Edmonson, who has developed one of the more unique record labels I’ve ever come across. Having a lot of experience in business, of course, naturally I’ve had my fair share of dealings in the Independent Music Label sector.

But this story is hardly about me–it’s about DeAngelo aka “Quincy Bones” the young man I happened to befriend–and after time he began to tell me about his record label and its credos, its dedication to local talent, how it gives back to the community and most importantly, that they drop 18 different tracks every single month, and have repeatedly done so since the label was formed on the very first day of January, 2010.

Don’t let the grammar fool you, Startin Frum Skratch Records, is proficient in words, deed and dollars. In words, Startin Frum Skratch has done exactly that.

Startin Frum Skratch Records Where Everybody Plays their Role

From its humble beginnings on top of kitchen tables, inside garages, living rooms and parks, the label has become an entity that garners respect wherever its members and “Band of Brothers” happen to go.

Founded by DeAngelo “Bones” Edmonson, Startin’ Frum Skratch Records has morphed from a group of rag tag rappers into its own force like a gale force wind.

Together, they represent the hopes and aspirations of all their musicians and crew–a diverse group of men and women of all ages and races. By deed, everyone that’s part of Startin Frum Skratch Records, leads by example.

The hearts and minds of an entire community are behind them, as their agenda is to influence both today and tomorrow by example from the top down of the organization. Much of this has to do with the charisma, charm and brains of “Bones.” He got his nick because he’s skinny as a Bone. But don’t let that fool you–Edmonson is a scholar of the liberal classics–and he’s taken his knowledge of those to the streets and to the community.

Therefore, his credos is far reaching. Although a musician, much of who he is, and what he does, resembles that of a politician. Although they’re very diametrically opposed, in theory, in reality they can be integrated. As DeAngelo “Bones” Edmonson eloquently explains his philosophy: “Music can be more political that politics”. And I agree.

Like a force of nature, Startin Frum Skratch Records, is recalibrating and refocusing to literally ”recenter the music industry.”

Avoiding “back-room deals” made with conflicting interests, “Startin Frum Skratch Records” as I initially discovered has created an Independent, grass roots, record label.

According to Edmonson:

Every ten years history repeats and what were once considered to be “Old Fashions” become the new trends. Old movements become current events and things that have gone too far to the left or right, find their balance and center once more. Our goal is to ‘center the music industry’ our communities, our youth and those we consider to be role models.

Startin Frum Skratch Records is as organic as it gets. Bones says, “It’s not about the flame, it’s about the ashes. We’re extremely focused on building our foundation, because what we build today may be important; but what we leave behind will be history.

And I would add, Moths don’t follow other moths–they follow the light.

Wherever they go–Their Music Accompanies Them

Naturally, being the brilliant businessmen DeAngelo “Bones” Edmonson is–the label keeps all publishing rights and masters–as that’s part of the key to having a good Independent Label–along with good music and fantastic promotion.

To wit, their business philosophy:

Welcome to Startin Frum Skratch Official website. We hope to bring you the best entertainment EVER! Imagine a company who welcomes all opinions, talents, resources, and time schedule. We are building this company from scratch. We are making every member investors in our company.

Startin From Skratch Records also helps the community by keeping young men and women out of trouble by simply putting them to work or out in the field as videographers, models, hair stylists, photogaphers and every other position immanaiageable.

In essence, they’ve created a record label from nothing–from Scratch. And, they make and sell their own Swag–T-shirts–and along with making their own music, these visionary wunderkinds control their own music distribution and music production.

So what else is needed you may ask yourself?

Our support–let’s help them keep “the dream” by keeping their music going for the next 100 years. Support their website and whenever possible encourage these talented young ladies and gentlemen wherever and whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Meanwhile, kickback, and groove to the many artists involved in laying down their tracks and getting represented by a Label that’s dedicated to their art and artists which is a rare commodity in today’s world.

So here’s the roster of artists for you to enjoy and listen to the tracks they’ve laid down.

Just click on their Black & Blue Corporate Logo above to enjoy their Videos, Artists, Art, Events–and the rest of their information.

~Peace Out~

A new Broadway musical that brings together the legendary music of Frank Sinatra and the creative vision of Tony Award-winner Twyla Tharp (Movin’ Out).

In case you hadn’t heard, the Music Center downtown is offering free concerts designed to give you and your family a little taste of the world.

Each concert brings a different country to light.

This week, on January 14th, you can enjoy the Khac Chi Ensemble & Korean Classical Music and Dance Company at the W. M. Keck Children’s Amphitheatre in the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Khac Chi Ensemble performs the music of the mountain people of Vietnam featuring rare instruments such as the dan t’rung – a suspended bamboo xylophone – and the dan bau – a one-stringed zither. The energetic rhythms and fascinating timbres offer intriguing glimpses into Vietnam’s rich musical traditions.

Korean Classical Music and Dance Company

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, the Korean Classical Music and Dance Company performs both folk and court styles. Using a 12-tone scale instead of the Western diatonic scale, the company performs authentic music and exquisite dance that originated with the ancient culture’s royal dynasties.

Even though these performances are free, you still need to get tickets. Head to Grand Avenue at 2nd Street one hour before each scheduled concert time, which are at 11:00am and 12:30pm.

Workshops, designed to let children explore the featured culture through unique art-making projects such as calligraphy, puppets, musical instruments, accordion books, textile projects and more, are available on each concert day and are also free.

Although only part of the legendary Route 66 flows through California, it is still a part of her history, and indeed, the history of the nation.

Starting in Chicago and ending on the Santa Monica Pier, Route 66, which began in 1925 by an act of Congress, which connected a variety of existing roads to create a new highway–by 1938, it was a “continuously paved” thoroughfare.

Officially decommissioned by the Federal government in 1985, Route 66 still remains in the hearts and minds of many people as the ultimate cross county road tour.

Composed in 1946 by American actor/songwriter Bobby Troup, Get your Kicks on Route 66 was recorded in the same year by Nat King Cole.

In an interview he [Bobby Troup] once said the tune for the song, as well as the lyric Get your kicks on Route 66, came to him easily, but the remainder of the lyrics eluded him. More in frustration than anything else he simply filled up the song with the names of towns and cities on the highway. Source: Wikipedia

The song is so popular that at least 43 artists recorded it, including the Rolling Stones, John Mayer, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and The Cramps.

But that’s enough reading–let’s sit back and enjoy listening to the song:

Interestingly, of all the eight states that Route 66 passed through, only Kansas and its cities are not mentioned in the song.

It’s not too late.

If you’ve ever felt like Los Angeles was just too big and long for that small town feel, well, Culver City is the place to be.

Fiesta La Ballona, which started Friday night, will still be in full swing today, Sunday, August 28th from 11:00am-5:00pm for the booths, but the rides and food will still be open until 8:00pm.

There are also two music/entertainment stages featuring a wide variety of local talent.

Originally started as a week-long celebration back in 1951 as "Fiesta La Ballona Days," people went to events – and even to work! – dressed up as Native American Indians, rancheros, señoritas, cowboys and cowgirls. It was a great way for people to learn their history, plus show pride in where they came from.

Then In 1985, the fiesta was reinvented as a "Festival of the People" and the one-day event took on an international flavor. Five or six years later it became a weekend fair in May.

In 2003, the Fiesta was once again revived by offering events during the entire week with a culminating festival in Veteran’s Park. In 2004 amusement rides were added to attract families to the event. In 2005 the Culver City Lion’s Club opened the first Beer and Wine Garden. The Fiesta La Ballona continues to be a celebration of the past, present and future of Culver City showcasing both its warmth and its sophistication. It continues to offer people a place for food and fun and sharing. Source: Fiesta La Ballona

All I know is that it was fun and here are a few photos showing I’m not the only one who had a wonderful time:

Traditionally, the Labor Day weekend is a car-centric holiday, with many families enjoying the last summer retreat before the rigors of school, work and the rigors of everyday life begin anew.

Although many kids are already in school, the first couple weeks are a continued time to have “fun” and everyone looks forward to a quick holiday right after school starts.

For those of you driving this labor Day, don’t drink and drive. Of course, first and foremost is the safety of you and other drivers but second, consider the fact that according to the LAist, <a href=/laist.com/2011/08/19/lapd_announces_major_crackdown_on_d.php" target="_blank">LAPD Announces Major Crackdown on Drunk Driving Between Now and Labor Day.

To be sure, one of the best forms of entertainment while diving is playing Rockin’ music loud and often .

So, why not roll down your windows and enjoy these 25 Classic Songs for the Highway via Jack Barth’s Roadside Hollywood:

Because of the economic uncertainty and the cost of gas, people living in Southern California who used to travel to Las Vegas, no longer need to.

Ever since California and other states allowed for Indian owned lands to provide legal gambling—it’s been a boon for everyone—the people who enjoy gaming sensibly and responsibly; the State through the increase in tax revenues received; and of course, the Indians themselves, who are no longer viewed as being a Societal or sociological problem that needs constant government intervention.

Rather they’re now, once again, a proud and self-providing people and nation that they once were before.

People that are desirous for a real casino experience in Southern California, (and not in a secretive backroom location), have many legal gambling resort destinations located here to choose from among the many Indian casinos.

From first class resort accommodations, to exciting gambling and mega entertainment opportunities, visitors will find all the action of a trip to Las Vegas combined with the natural beauty of Southern California’s sun and surf, all rolled into one great adventure.

There’s no longer any need to go to Las Vegas for exciting gaming action. There are plenty of options and venues in Southern California to choose from, and many include entertainment, accommodations, and fine dining opportunities to go along for a weekend or a mini “staycation.”

Here’s a list of the Indian Casinos located in Southern California:

In the 1940s it was called the Melody Room (a jazz club frequented by gangster Bugsy Siegel), in the 1970s, it was called Flithy McNasty (a Hell’s Angel hangout), by the 80s, it was known as the Central, and in 1993, its name is the name it’s known by today, the Viper Room.

Opened in 1993, The Viper Room is considered to be among the more unique and hip clubs in Los Angeles, was originally partly owned by actor, Johnny Depp. The club is infamous in Hollywood lore, as the site where actor River Phoenix died of a drug overdose on Halloween morning in 1993. Even after Phoenix’s death, the club remained a hangout for Hollywood’s most popular young actors.

But, it also has was infamous where because it was the place that helped to create many a taleto tell:

In March 1994, TV star Nicole Eggert of Baywatch fame got into a malicious fight with another girl over a mutual boyfriend.

After the overnight multi-platinum success of the Counting Crows debut album, August and Everything After, their lead-singer Adam Duritz decided to find a real job for a “reality check,” so he bartended at the The Viper Room.

On Oct. 1, 1996, a possible photo of Mick Jagger embracing actress Uma Thurman, netted the photographer $600,000 in damages when Jagger’s bodyguard wrested him to the ground, after which club employees’ destroyed the film. Of course, the photographer sued. Jagger settled out of court, but the jury gave the photographer the award mentioned above.

In September 1996, again a photographer was pushed when he tried to videotape rocker Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe, and his wife, actress Pamela Anderson. Lee was convicted of battery and was fined and sentenced to a 24-month summary probation and 200 hours of community service.

Today, under the ownership of Harry Morton, President and CEO of Pink Taco and the son of Hard Rock Cafe co-founder Peter Morton, the Viper Room retains an aura and reality of Rock and Roll-cum-Celebrity-cum-Hipster icon status–it has and is one of our city’s more well known and famous musical venues–celebrated and shared with only only a few others. Among the vaulted VIP list of musical legend The Viper Room venue shares its iconic crown with such notable clubs including The Roxy, The Whiskey a Go-Go, and the Troubadour—all legendary music clubs in West Hollywood and host to many a famous band, musician and legendary performances.

But, mystery still sounds the Viper Room via Johnny Depp. In a lawsuit involving the disappearance of a Viper co-owner, Anthony Fox, in 2001, (The details of which are currently unknown). Depp’s quietly by signing over all of his interests in the Viper Room to Anthony Fox’s daughter.

Who knows what will happen next at the Viper Room, but it still remains Los Angeles’ infamous and famous Rock N Roll club, and will forever be “the place” to see and be seen.

For this edition of SALS, we won’t be doing a lot of singing, but rather–a lot of foot tapping is on the way.

Did you know that the Los Angeles Unified School District has an All City Jazz Band?

Due to some previously scheduled meetings, I was unable to attend the 16th Annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival, but the All City Jazz Band performed there. In fact, they were the opening band for the concert.

Through the partnership of Beyond the Bell a Branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, in 2010, the LAUSD All City Jazz Band was established.

Although it’s only in its second year, the ensemble has already played some high profile concerts:

The 2010 and 2011 Central Avenue Jazz Festival, plus the 2010 and 2011 Playboy Jazz Festivals.

From Tony White, director of LAUSD All City Jazz Band:

The unique thing about this whole program is that the fact that the kids are coming together from different walks of life to work together to create a product (Music), that is really outstanding. It embodies the model of what we should be doing in the world: coming together, working together, putting aside our differences and trying to do something positive. Source: Southern California Public Radio

So that’s the backdrop story about the LAUSD All City Jazz Band-now let’s listen to their music:

You might drive by it and not even see it, just as I did the first two times I passed them by, unless you already know that they’re there and happen to be looking for them–or perhaps you walk past them and notice their majestic grandeur–these two famous stone gates that guard the Hollywood Sign, are both a memento of a time gone by and remain as a reminder of our unassuming Los Angeles iconic heritage. Naturally, they are included in the City of Los Angeles’ Historical-Cultural Monument list as our historical cultural monument #20.

Built in the early 1920s and located on and just below 2690 West Beachwood Drive are a keepsake of the early historic remnants of the beginning and history of <a href="a href="http://www.beachwoodcanyon.org/HISTORY.htm">Hollywoodland: Two Stone Gates

What started out only as an idea and concept in the minds of railway magnates Eli P. Clark, and M. H. Sherman, when they acquired 640 acres to create an exclusive hillside community–aptly named Hollywoodland.

And to make their dreams come true, Clark and Sherman partnered with LA Times publisher Harry Chandler, and real estate developers Tracy E.
Thus, Hollywoodland was born.

Over the years, many famous people have passed by the Two Stone Gates on their way home. Mary Mallory, who serves on the Hollywood Heritage Board of Directors and wrote Hollywoodland, describes the early residents of the area including Graphics designer Romain di Tirtoff, also known as Erte, was the first celebrity resident of the neighborhood.

Also ensconced into the history books of the area’s famous residents include such stars as Bela Lugosi, Robert Montgomery, Gale Sondergaard, Ned Beatty, Jon Cryer, and Kathy Bates have all lived here and called the place home. Included are such artists as writers James M. Cain, and Aldous Huxley, screenwriter/director Herbert Biberman, film director Norman Z. McLeod, and composers Max Steiner, and Miklos Rozsa whom have all also called it home.

Musicians including Benny Carter, Stan Kenton, Peter Tork, Madonna, and Moby, have all resided in the Hollywood Hills vicinity.

So, what started as crop land in the 1880s subsequently became an artist’s retreat. As time remains the great equalizer–it’s amazing what a little promotion can do.

Music doesn’t get much more personal than a single person and their guitar standing in front of a microphone. For Joni Mitchell, that’s her signature.

Over five decades, Joni Mitchell has taken her music from small nightclubs in Toronto; to coffee shops in Detroit; and to major concerts around the world.

Known for her unique and distinctive voice–and sophisticated vocal harmony and arrangements–Joni Mitchell is a musical trailblazer that many an artist aspires to.

Mitchell’s work is highly respected both by critics and by fellow musicians. Rolling Stone Magazine called her “one of the greatest songwriters ever”, and Allmusic said, “When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century.”

During the course of her career, Mitchell has both performed and written her own songs.

Her first Grammy award in 1969, was for Clouds, her album featuring the songs Chelsea Morning, Both Sides, Now, and Tin Angel. Strikingly symbolic of her wide swath of artistic talent, the covers of both LPs, including a self-portrait on Clouds, were designed and painted by Mitchell.

Over the years, Mitchell, who always looks for new influences–experimented with jazz, rock, and folk. She worked with a veritable who’s who in the music industry of her time. Throughout her career, she has been nominated for 16 Grammys, winning nine.

Her very personal 1971 album, Blue, was voted #30 in Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list of 2003. Also in 2003, Rolling Stone named her the 72nd greatest guitarist of all time making her the highest-ranked woman on the list.

Today, Mitchell, who is currently being treated for Morgellons Syndrome said in April 2010:

I have this weird, incurable disease that seems like it’s from outer space, but my health’s the best it’s been in a while, Two nights ago, I went out for the first time since Dec. 23: I don’t look so bad under incandescent light, but I look scary under daylight. Garbo and Dietrich hid away just because people became so upset watching them age, but this is worse. Fibers in a variety of colors protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically identified as animal, vegetable or mineral. Morgellons is a slow, unpredictable killer — a terrorist disease: it will blow up one of your organs, leaving you in bed for a year. But I have a tremendous will to live: I’ve been through another pandemic — I’m a polio survivor, so I know how conservative the medical body can be. In America, the Morgellons is always diagnosed as “delusion of parasites,” and they send you to a psychiatrist. I’m actually trying to get out of the music business to battle for Morgellons sufferers to receive the credibility that’s owed to them. Source: LATimes

But in the end, Joni Mitchell, who currently splits her time between her LA residence and a home in British Columbia, sees her songs as “confessional”:

It’s an ugly term — it’s “confessional” if you don’t get it; if you do get it, you see yourself in the songs. I usually use “I” as the narrator in my songs, but not all the “I’s” are me; they’re characters. It’s theater. Tennessee Williams’ plays are drawn from personal experience — does that make him “confessional”? If I’m playing Joan of Arc, you wouldn’t tell me, “That performance was very confessional.” I’m usually the playwright and actress — but in this case, with John, we now have a new actress! Right?; Source: LATimes

All I know is that I love her music, and am able to visualize myself within her lyrics, and never tire of listening:

It isn’t often that a musician is honored by the state where they were born. But, that’s exactly what happened on May 28th, 2011.

On that day, Michigan’s Governor, Rick Snyder, announced it was Bob Seger Day celebrating more than 50 years as a rock and roll musician, singer, songwriter and Michigan native.

Regardless, one may legitimately ask what does this have to do with Travelin’ Local, a primarily Los Angeles and Southern California based magazine?

Because of his beautiful and emotional ode to our city via his song Hollywood Nights, a Bob Seger classic:

With a career spanning over 4 decades, Bob Segers’s music, which often tells a story, remains as popular today as it did when it was first introduced.

Born in 1945, Seger started playing music as early as the 1960s, but never found what he was looking for until he founded the Silver Bullet Band.

It’s a classic tale of working hard to obtain your goals, so when, in 1976, he and the Band achieved national attention with the release of Live Bullet, a double-vinyl-record set, which stayed on the Billboard charts for 168 weeks, peaking at #34, and eventually reached 5x Platinum status and is one of the Top 10 selling live albums of all time.

Over the next several years, Seger would record 5 more albums, each with hit songs of their own, and amazingly, the movies and television have brought Seger’s songs even more attention. Featured in the movie, Risky Business, with Tom Cruise singing in his underwear, “Old Time Rock and Roll” remains a classic movie meets music moment.

Later, Seger’s song, “Like a Rock,” is associated with Chevrolet, something Seger chose to do to help support the struggling American automobile workers in his native Detroit.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on March 15, 2004, Segar continues to sing and write music to the present.

In that vein, let’s sit back and rock out to Seger’s unique brand of Rock and Roll.

The multi-instrumental and faceted musician, Beck, hails from Los Angeles, California.

When he first started to perform his highly personalized “style” of music, he combined stage art alongside his songs. As well, his use of theatrics by incorporating drum machines and sound effects, undercut the “stereotypical” image and sounds one might expect from a Rock musician.

Beck’s unique and curious melodies and concerts, started to build his fan base from the ground up, until his songs became both extremely sophisticated and richly and texturally recorded.

He’s been hailed by critics throughout his musical career as being amongst the most creative and idiosyncratic musicians of the 1990s and 2000s for alternative rock.

This four-time platinum artist rose to underground popularity with his early works, which combined social criticism with musical and lyrical experimentation.

In 1994, Beck earned his first wide public attention for his breakthrough single Loser, which was followed up with his highly acclaimed EP Okelay in 1996, which was subsequently followed by another smash album, Sea Change in 2002.

Indeed, I recall when Loser first came out and I couldn’t stop listening to it.

Until 1996, with the release of Odelay, many considered Beck a one-hit wonder. However, once it earned a number of industry awards, plus, two Grammys, the one-hit wonder idea was dropped.

In fact, within the year, Odelay received praise from Rolling Stone magazine and appeared on many “Best of” lists, also topping the Pazz and Jop Critics Poll for Album of the Year.

Subsequently, Beck has never looked back as he continues recording, collaborating or experimenting with new songs, and working with different musicians and industry professionals.

He’s frequently in the media, and maintains his own website, where you can gain insight into his prodigious and gifted oeuvre.

Whenever another cookie-cutter corporate wannabe appears on television or is played repeatedly, it’s obvious that they’re literally pushed some no talent musician or group on you from the record label’s A & E guys.

Lastly, for all of you struggling musicians, currently there’s so much original and fantastic musicians like Beck out there, that make listening to the music we love—Rock n’ Roll—something that will always remain a part of us—both outwardly and inwardly—with consciousness and awareness,

Remember, many of us will always desire and will never case to purchase the music and songs that we love that’s that’s unique and original.

That being said, we want-and need–more musicians like Beck .

For this morning’s Sing-a-Long Saturday, we’d like to start off with re-introducing you to the band, Van Halen, and tell you a bit about the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly that accompanied their storied career and music, as they reached the pinnacle of Rock and Roll success.

The Good

Hailing from Pasadena, Van Halen, a hard rock band, came together in 1972. Right from the start, with their debut album, Van Halen, crafted in 1978, success came their way. In fact, as of 2007 Van Halen has sold 80 million albums worldwide and has had the most #1 hits on the Billboard’s mainstream rock chart.

During the 1980s they also had more Billboard Hot 100 hits than any other hard rock or heavy metal band. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Van Halen is the 19th best-selling band/artist of all time with sales of over 56 million albums in the U.S. alone, and is one of only five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. In 1999, the RIAA certified their debut album diamond for ten million in U.S. sales.

The original band consisted of the flamboyant front man, David Lee Roth, whose self-confidence and super-sized ego played no small matter in propelling the band to the top with the assistance of one of Rock and Roll greatest guitarists, Eddie Van Halen.

During this time, the band released many quintessential Rock and Roll songs and albums.

The band toured for nearly a year, opening for Black Sabbath and establishing a reputation for their performances. The band’s chemistry owed much to Eddie Van Halen’s technical guitar wizardry and David Lee Roth’s flamboyant antics, which later turned them into rivals. Their second album, Van Halen II, yielded the band’s first hit single, Dance the Night Away.

Other popular tunes that the band produced during this period, which were perfect for the then rising MTV television video network station, included Hot For Teacher, and Jump, and Panama, among many of the band’s productions.

The other member of the band included Eddie Van Halen’s brothers– Alex Van Halen – drums, percussion and Wolfgang Van Halen – bass, backing vocals.

The Bad

Just as the band had reached its apogee of commercial and artistic success the tensions between Eddie Van Halen and David Roth had come to a head. So, in 1985, Roth left the band to do solo work and he was replaced by singer Sammy Hagar, who would subsequently, over the course of the next 10 years, substitute for Roth as Van Halen’s lead singer.

In 1986, the Van Halen album 5150 was a hit, becoming the band’s first #1 album on the Billboard charts–driven by the keyboard-dominated singles Why Can’t This Be Love, Dreams, and Love Walks In.

To further introduce the new era for the band, a new Van Halen logo was put on the cover of their album. The new logo retained elements of the original, but now the lines extending from either side of ‘VH’ wrapped around and formed a ring.

The Ugly

After more band in-fighting that can fill a dictionary, the lead singer Hagar was subsequently replaced with another lead singer—Gary Cherrone. (Hagar claimed that he was fired; Van Halen claimed that he quit. Most accounts confirm that Hagar technically quit, but only upon finding that Van Halen had secretly been recording with their longtime rival David Lee Roth).

Lasting only three years, Cherrone left the band on good terms and still remains in contact.

Today, David Lee Roth has returned, and there are rumors about a new album.

So, all of these years later, Van Halen, from Pasadena California, remains an important and significant addition to Rock and Roll, and is considered among the top Rock and Roll bands of all time.

Now let’s kick back and listen to them this Sing-a-Long Saturday!

After a dull corporate label driven decade of bad records and music ranging for most of the 70′s, rock and pop fans became legitimately disoriented to the music (Rock and Roll), that they had come to love.

As a natural act of rebellion to that, alongside the musical malaise of the 70’s decade, was the genesis of the roots of what was to become known famously, and infamously as “Punk Rock” which changed the face and nature of the rock genre during the 80’s to the present.

Much of punk rock mutated in the 1980′s into hardcore, a harder, faster, and less melodic form of punk.

Other punk musicians headed in the opposite direction toward the synth-heavy, danceable pop that dominated the pop music world in the early 1980′s. By the late 1980′s, a new form of punk began to emerge with a hard and fast guitar and drums base but powered by pop melodies like much of 70′s punk rock.

Also associated with Punk Rock was violence or the perception—often correctly—of the possibility of violence. Punk Rock didn’t only symbolize music; but a way of life as well—counter culture, anti-establishment with certain accoutrements such as Mohawks, Doc Martins, Slam Dancing, and a host of things that your mother would drop dead if she knew what they entailed.

Pock Rock symbolized an anti-establishment ethos which originally started in England, with such notable bands as the Sex Pistols and The Clash, but quickly spread across the globe, and part of its epicenter landed here in Los Angeles.

As in any “movement,” there’s always territorial and ego rights involved, and the Punk Rock scene was no different.

Following recent releases of recordings by other international and national punk bands such as the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and The Damned, a number of punk bands were formed in the Los Angeles area.

From San Francisco, a group of California-based bands, often referred to as the first wave of punk pop, began to form including the wildly successful band Green Day.

In 1978 in Southern California, the first hardcore punk bands arose, whose fans tended to be younger than the art punks of the older LA scene and came mainly from the suburban parts of the Los Angeles area.

These hardcore bands also created a crossover sound. The genre of thrash grew out of this fusion.

Many of the Los Angeles and Orange County hardcore bands became synonymous with violence both during concerts and also directed at different areas and ethnicities.

Long to say, the movement lasted long enough to enable the music of the 80’s to emerge, which then led to the 90’s Grunge movement and into the present day of anything goes.

So in that vein, let’s wave a fist in the air and be a Punk Rocker this Saturday morning!
