<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What if the  hipsters in San Diego made the ultimate  sacrifice to don even tighter jeans, (than usual) show more skin than their cut-off jean shorts currently reveal, and decided to grow more daring moustache and facial-hair configurations.</p>
<p>Then San Diego might qualify in <a href="http://blog.priceonomics.com/post/16013457968/the-fixie-bike-index" rel="nofollow">Priceonomics</a>&#8216; top-ten list of the &#8220;Most Hipster Places in America.&#8221;</p>
<p>But for now, San Diego finished 11th, just behind Honolulu.</p>
<p><a href="http://priceonomics.com/" rel="nofollow">The price-guide website</a> compiled the list of most-hip cities by looking at the number of fixed-gear bicycles (aka &#8220;fixies&#8221;) for sale per capita in 96 cities across America. (Don&#8217;t ask why).</p>
<p>&#8220;Fixies (fixed gear bikes) are considered to be a strong indicator of hipsterness,&#8221; read the <a href="http://blog.priceonomics.com/post/16013457968/the-fixie-bike-index" rel="nofollow">post</a>. Because of the minimalism of this fixed gear system, the bikes tend to be aesthetically pleasing but somewhat challenging to ride. This enigmatic combination may be what draws hipsters to the bikes, or not.&#8221;</p>
<p>To the surprise of many, including those at <a href="http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2012/01/orange_county_the_most_hipster.php" rel="nofollow">OC Weekly</a>, Orange County finished at the top of the list. (You may ask me why, on this!)</p>
<p>The good news. California&#8217;s a pretty hipster friendly state! In all there were 7 cities in California that  finished in the top ten.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-33224" title="Hip City San Diego" src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/HipCitySanDiego-300x187.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="187" /></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Or</strong> w<em style="font-weight: bold;">hen you really need to stop, but how a few minutes at the beach will wash away your troubles and just might fix everything.</em></p>
<p>With one of the best climates on the globe, and one of the most stressed out populations in the country, it might be time to merge the two views as we learn how to opt out and power down with beaches like <a href="http://www.visitnewportbeach.com/listings/index.cfm?action=display&amp;listingID=177&amp;menuID=72&amp;hit=1">Little Corona Del Mar</a>.</p>
<p>On a recent trip I discovered a book about stopping that seems custom made for Californians. <a href="http://www.stopping.com/stopping__how_to_be_still_when_you_have_to_keep_going_65176.htm">David Kundtz’s <em>STOPPING, How to Be Still When You Have to Keep Going</em>,</a></p>
<p>“Life has become so complex that our old methods of coping no longer work. It’s time for something totally new – stopping.  The idea is to do nothing as much as possible for a definite period of time so you can wake up and remember who you are, so you can get going again in a more purposeful, centered way.”</p>
<p><strong><em>Kundtz’s three time lengths for stopping are:</em></strong></p>
<p>n      &#8211; <strong><em>Stillpoints &#8212; brief moments in the midst of a hectic day</em></strong></p>
<p>n     <strong><em>&#8211; Stopovers &#8212; timeouts from an hour to a week</em></strong></p>
<p>n     <strong><em>&#8211; Grinding Halts &#8212; sustained periods away from it all</em></strong></p>
<p align="center"><strong><em>On Site Research</em></strong></p>
<p>Recently I backed this theory up with some on site research trying out the stopover approach. I picked Little Corona del Mar Beach as my stopping point for the afternoon.</p>
<p>Indeed, as I headed downPacific Coast Highway,  I was in a so-so mood.</p>
<p>But that mood began to lift change the moment I parked my care overlooking the magnificent bluffs above the Little Corona Del Mar beach. The view was spectacular.</p>
<p>By the time I had scooted down the short, steep hill, I was grinning as I saw and was soon to be at the bottom.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-32967" title="Little Corona Del Mar beach below the Cliffs" src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/CoronaDelMar3-768x1024.jpg" alt="" width="768" height="1024" /></p>
<p>There below was aSouthern Californiaprescription for bliss: fresh air, sun, sand, small brown pelicans and a million little seabirds, all scooting around the wet sand, calling to me to come and play.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-32966" title="Little Corona Del Mar Beach's Tidepool" src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/CoronaDelMarSeagulls-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<p>This could be the perfect spot for a family getaway too. Bring some shovels and buckets to play in the sand and pack a picnic and a blanket. The rest of the afternoon will take care of itself.</p>
<p>Little Corona Del Mar Beach is just the right spot for visiting:</p>
<p>Not deserted, but not crowded, not too large, and close-by, of course, in Orange County.  There’s free parking on the streets on the bluff and a short walk down the paved hill and you’re literally on the sand next to the gorgeous shoreline.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-32970" title="Little Corona Del Mar Beach in Orange County" src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/CoronaDelMar2-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>There are no food stands, but a picnic would be perfect.   A restroom/shower is available on the walk down.</p>
<p>If you arrive by 9 a.m. the tide pools are reachable for exploring. Later the tide comes in and you’ll just have to be content with a glorious view, lovely  air and near perfect solitude.</p>
<p>It’s your turn now to try stopping, to enjoy “the times-in-between and the pause between the notes.”</p>
<p><strong>Directions to Little Corona Del Mar Beach</strong>: FromLos Angeles take the 405 freeway exit at Jamboree. Drive toPacific Coast Highway, “PCH”, turn left and drive toPoppy Drive in Corona Del Mar. Turn right at Poppy and left at Ocean.</p>
<p>From there, the beach is a short walk down the hill from Ocean.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The coastal strip of San Diego is more than a hundred miles long, and with its Mediterranean climate of mild wet winters, and warm dry summers, results in a long growing season, and probably the best weather anywhere in the world.</p>
<p>San Diego’s average temperatures, range from a January minimum of 45F, to an August maximum of 80F, with a yearly average of 62F!</p>
<p>Hey, <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/life%e2%80%99s-a-beach/" target="_blank">Life’s a Beach</a>.</p>
<p>The majority of rainfall comes during the winter and early spring, with a seasonal average of less than 10 inches.</p>
<p>Located to the south are <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/christmas-morning-in-san-diego-a-multi-part-series/" target="_blank">Blacks beach and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier.</a></p>

<div id="attachment_16787"><a href="http://www.sandiego.org/"><img title="San Diego Skyline" src="http://blog.sandiego.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Downtown_SkylineandFerry_fromCoronado.jpg" alt="San Diego Skyline" width="620" height="325" /></a>San Diego Skyline</div>
<p>As we celebrate the start of 2012,here is the top ten reasons  you should visit San Diego in 2012.</p>
<p>1. <strong><a title="Travel + Leisure's America's Favorite Cities Reader Poll" href="http://www.travelandleisure.com/americas-favorite-cities/2011/city/san-diego" target="_blank">The Best</a></strong>: In <em>Travel + Leisure’s </em>recent America’s Favorite Cities Reader Poll, San Diego was voted the <strong>#1 Destination for Best Weather and Best Spring Break</strong>. We also scored #2 for Best Summer Vacation, Family Vacation, 4th of July Destination and Most Attractive People.</p>
<p>2. <strong><a title="Dining in San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/DiningAndNightlife" target="_blank">Fabulous Food</a></strong>: A slew of restaurants are slated to open or have recently opened to offer visitors amazing culinary choices. Hot on the radar is <strong><a title="Underbelly" href="http://www.godblessunderbelly.com/" target="_blank">UnderBelly</a></strong> which recently opened in Little Italy, <strong><a title="Saltbox Dining &amp; Drinking" href="http://www.sandiego.org/listing/Visitors/14395" target="_blank">Saltbox</a></strong> inside the<strong><a title="Palomar San Diego Hotel" href="http://www.sandiego.org/listing/Visitors/9991" target="_blank">Palomar San Diego</a></strong> hotel, and Brian Malarkey’s latest venture, <strong><a title="Gingham" href="https://www.facebook.com/GinghamEats" target="_blank">Gingham</a></strong>.</p>
<p>3. <strong><a title="Whale Watching in San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/article_set/Visitors/51" target="_blank">A Whale of a Time</a></strong>: Majestic California gray whales make their annual migration from the Arctic waters to the warm lagoons in the Gulf of California for breeding. These “peaceful giants of the sea” come within miles of San Diego’s coastline.</p>
<p>4. <strong><a title="Budget Travel's Take on San Diego" href="http://www.budgettravel.com/feature/top-budget-travel-destinations-for-2012,8005/?page=1" target="_blank">Worth the Money</a></strong>: <em>Budget Travel Magazine </em>came out with it’s <strong>Top 10 Budget Travel Destinations for 2012</strong>, and named San Diego among them. Be sure to check out our <a title="25 Free Things to Do In San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/article/Visitors/795" target="_blank">25 free things to do in San Diego</a>. One of my favorites…<a title="San Diego's Mission Bay" href="http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/Regions/MissionBayandBeaches" target="_blank">Mission Bay Park</a>.</p>
<p>5. <strong><a title="Sports and Outdoor Recreation in San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/WhatToDo/SportsRecreation" target="_blank">The Great Outdoors</a></strong>: San Diego’s temperate weather allows for outdoor activities all year round. Go hiking along the water in <strong><a title="Torrey Pines State Reserve" href="http://www.sandiego.org/article/Visitors/36" target="_blank">Torrey Pines State Reserve</a></strong> or mountain biking through the natural landscapes of <strong><a title="Mission Trails Regional Park" href="http://www.sandiego.org/listing/Visitors/1945" target="_blank">Mission Trails Regional Park</a></strong>. <a title="New Year’s Resolution Time: Get Outdoors in San Diego" href="http://blog.sandiego.org/2012/01/new-years-resolution-time-get-outdoors-in-san-diego/" target="_blank">Here are a few more ideas to get outdoors</a>. There is no reason you should stay inside while in San Diego!</p>
<p>6. <strong><a title="San Diego Breweries" href="http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/DiningAndNightlife/Breweries" target="_blank">Craft Brew</a></strong>: San Diego is home to the nation’s best brew pubs including <a href="http://www.pizzaport.com/category-s/1819.htm">Pizza Port </a>which just recently won <a title="San Diego is Home to Nation’s Best Brewpubs" href="http://blog.sandiego.org/2011/12/san-diego-best-brewpubs/" target="_blank"><strong>Small Brewpub of the Year at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival</strong></a>.</p>
<p>7. <strong><a title="Beaches in San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/WhatToDo/BeachesParks" target="_blank">The Beach…enough said</a></strong>: With over 100 miles of beaches, it’s no wonder that in June 2011, <em>The Travel Channel’s </em>famed “Dr. Beach” announced his annual picks for the Best Beaches in America and Coronado Beach was named No. 2.</p>
<p>8. <strong><a title="Nightlife in San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/DiningAndNightlife" target="_blank">San Diego Nightlife</a></strong>: San Diego’s nightlife scene has never been hotter. San Diego was among the top 10 hottest New Year’s Eve destinations according to a hotwire.com survey. Visitors can celebrate all year long in the <a title="San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter" href="http://www.sandiego.org/article/Visitors/803" target="_blank">Gaslamp Quarter</a> with over 100 restaurants and clubs, it is the place to be any time of year.</p>
<p>9. <strong><a title="Balboa Park" href="http://www.sandiego.org/listing/Visitors/12768" target="_blank">Get Your Culture On</a></strong>: Be sure to visit Balboa Park and its 85 cultural and recreational organizations. My favorites are the San Diego Model Railroad Museum and The San Diego Museum of Art. Not to be missed this year is the new exhibit at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, <a href="http://www.rhfleet.org/site/exhibition/upcomingexhibits.html"><em>Black Holes: Space Warps &amp; Time Twists</em></a><em>.</em></p>
<p>10. <strong><a title="Surfing in San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/article/Visitors/439" target="_blank">Surf Culture</a></strong>: San Diego is widely known for its laid back vibe with some of the best <a title="Surf Spots in San Diego" href="http://www.sandiego.org/article/Visitors/439" target="_blank">surfing spots</a> in Southern California. To top it off, we are also home to the world’s first Center for Surf Research at San Diego State University (not a bad way to spend your college years!)</p>
<p>As they say, in San Diego, &#8220;Life&#8217;s a Beach&#8221;.</p>

<p>New Years Day Poem</p>
<p>I have been feeling in a rut &#8211;and kind of blue, but I made it my New Year&#8217;s resolution to be more positive and more &#8220;out there&#8221;.</p>
<p>This New Year</p>
<p>© Aleena</p>
<p>Even during the worst of times<br />
When I feel the years go slipping by<br />
Life seems rife with possibilities<br />
When the New Year arrives.</p>
<p>Buoyed by hope at the new year coming<br />
I feel renewed and want to start living.<br />
This year I&#8217;ll travel and see the sights<br />
I&#8217;ll be bold, I&#8217;ll be courageous</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll reach out and go beyond<br />
I might even try being flirtatious!<br />
I&#8217;ll be a new fish in a brand new pond.<br />
This new year I&#8217;ll be brave and I&#8217;ll be strong.</p>
<p>Even though time does fly<br />
I won&#8217;t let this year be wasted<br />
I&#8217;ll look forward to new adventures<br />
And be open to opportunities I am graced with.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll learn and laugh and have good times<br />
I won&#8217;t dwell on years gone by<br />
I&#8217;ll start each new morning a brand new way<br />
I&#8217;ll pretend it is New Year&#8217;s Day!</p>
<p>From the staff at Travelin&#8217; Local: May this year bring you everything that you have been striving for, have dedicated yourself to and that which brings you joy.</p>
<p>To one, to all, and to everyone, Have a Happy New Year.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Being able to enjoy the ocean while waking up to the sound of the surf, is one of life&#8217;s most special joys. </p>
<p>And, during my stay at the <a href="<a href="http://www.hiltoncarlsbad.com/" target="_blank">Hilton Garden Inn Carlsbad Beach</a>, my room faced the aquatint of this magnificent stretch of beach; so I was blessed with both the Pacific&#8217;s view; as well as its breeze and crashing of waves which lulled me to sleep.</p>
<p>Here, being near the ocean surfing, is but one option one may have here at Carlsbad State beach&#8211;which is literally across the street from the Hilton Garden Inn.</p>
<p>With its nearly seven miles of unspoiled, uncrowded, and sun-drenched beaches, including <a href="http://parks.ca.gov/?page_id=653" target="_blank">Carlsbad State Beach</a> aka Tamarack Beach and <a href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=660" target="_blank">South Carlsbad State Beach</a>, visitors can swim, fish, surf, or just soak in the sun as you walk along the water’s edge.</p>
<p>Carlsbad has an <a href="http://www.carlsbadca.gov/services/departments/parksandrec/trails/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank">extensive 30 mile trail system</a> of both paved and unpaved trails, one of which follows the coast highway. </p>
<p>Most of Carlsbad trails are dog-friendly&#8211;with leash restrictions&#8211;and many of the trails are open to bikes.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TL9-22x.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TL9-22x.jpg" alt="Walking along the beach in Carlsbad" title="Walking along the beach in Carlsbad" width="570" height="449" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30476" /></a></p>
<p>Speaking of bikes, many of the roads here, including Carlsbad Boulevard, have a bike lane. So when you plan your visit definitely pack your bike, if you have one. Of course, there are places to rent a bike here as well. One of my favorite sights during my pampered stay here, was being able to watch a family of 6, all riding bikes, including a preschooler who rode a bike extension with her father. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TL9-22z1.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TL9-22z1.jpg" alt="" title="Let&#039;s do a little fishing" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30480" /></a></p>
<p>In addition to the beach, Carlsbad has over 1,000 acres of protected lagoons and nature preserves. Obviously, popular spots for fishing and hiking&#8211;this open space provides everyone a chance to enjoy nature, exercise, relax and take in its fantastic views.</p>
<p><iframe width="570" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lSYsdUpEjg8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>And of course, Tamarack, has some of the best surfing in all of Southern California.
<p>It appears to me as one of those win-win-win-win-win-win situations.
<p>And you know what? I ain&#8217;t gonna complain cause I know that every time I make my sojourn to the the Hilton Garden Inn, I get to enjoy both the gorgeous hotel and all of its amenities and all else that wonderful Carlsbad has to offer. I&#8217;m just not one to turn down a great thing.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This movie is based on the life and subsequent tragedy which befell upon a young, gifted and quite beautiful surfer, Bethany Hamilton, whose left arm was bitten off by a shark—a surfer’s worst nightmare—or for that matter anyone’s worst nightmare. </p>
<p>Lucky for her, she was surfing with her family on Kauai, Hawaii, when tragedy struck.
<p>Her farther immediately took off his shirt and tied a tourniquet around her arm to ameliorate or to help stop the huge bleeding; r farther immediately took off his shirt and tied a tourniquet around her arm to ameliorate or to help stop the huge bleeding.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.surfersvillage.com/surfing/32454/news.htm"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/bethany_hamilton.jpg" alt="" title="Bethany Hamilton" width="400" height="268" class="alignright size-full wp-image-30202" /></a>
<p>Honestly, it wasn’t so much that the shark bit her (that was enough of a tragedy); but what she had to emotionally, psychologically, mentally, and physically deal with afterward—you see&#8211;Bethany’s goal was to be a professional surfer, and most people would think that you can’t surf big waves with only one arm. (And they’d probably be correct.) </p>
<p>But, then came Bethany, with her huge heart, soul, and desire of a young woman to let nothing get in the way of her dreams.</p>
<p>Bethany proved them all wrong.</p>
<p>Although rare, a shark attack happens a lot more than people perhaps realize. </p>
<p>We do know a few basics about them—they love the scent of blood, do not like things bobbing on top of the waters surface—and they are utterly and completely deadly—unless one is very, very lucky.</p>
<p><a href="http://realsportsheroes.com/bethany-hamilton/"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/BethanyHamilton.jpg" alt="" title="Bethany Hamilton" width="400" height="280" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-30203" /></a>
<p>Bethany, (played by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AnnaSophia_Robb" target="_blank">AnnaSophia Robb</a>) was born to surf. A natural talent who took to the waves at a young age, she was leading an idyllic life on Kauai, participating in national surf competitions with her best friend Alana (Lorraine Nicholson), when everything changed.</p>
<p>The supporting actors—played by Tom Hamilton, Bethany’s father, (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Quaid" target="_blank">Dennis Quaid</a>), Bethany’s best friend, Alana Blanchard, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorraine_Nicholson" target="_blank">Lorraine Nicholson</a>, and her mom as played by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Hunt" target="_blank">Helen Hunt</a>.</p>
<p>The heart of Soul Surfer offers a personal perspective about the true story and life,&#8211;a promising young surfer who discovers her main purpose in life&#8211;as she overcomes the loss of her arm to a 14-foot tiger shark off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii on October 31<sup>st</sup>, 2003.</p>
<p><iframe width="570" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_2GI7cq8RZg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>This often laden, at times, overly faith-based documentary provides viewers Bethany’s heart in trying to tackle the difficult universal oft asked question: </p>
<p><i>Why does God allow bad things and tragedy often happen in our lives to good people?</i></p>
<p>Dealing with topics from self-consciousness and courage to faith in God, the film, Heart of a Soul Surfer, presents a good message in a fun, exciting way; told from the heart of a young woman with great passion and dedication to God.</p>
<p><iframe width="570" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MWeOjBCi3c4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Alas no good story will be taken for granted in Hollywood without some unnecessary sentimentality. In the case with Soul Surfer-god spirituality and miracles are at times intertwined with the plot as Bethany’s best friend is a Christian fanatic and that theme, at times is brought into the plot at different times, by different characters. OK, once; TWICE –your pushing your luck; after that we just want to watch the incredible ordeal, determination and ultimate success of Bethany becoming a one armed pro surfer (And she is nothing but spectacular.)</p>
<p>When all is said and done, I recommend it for some inspiration, a semi-decent plot, and of course to learn more about the remarkable Bethany Hamilton.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When we last visited the <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/venice-canals-included-walking-tour-part-7/" target="_blank">Venice (Canals included) Walking Tour</a>, we were at 453 Rialto Avenue. </p>
<p>Now it’s time to keep &#8220;Truckin&#8217;&#8221; and moving on, (Many thanks to the late, great, Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead, for such an appropriate and prescient term).</p>
<p>And this time, we&#8217;ll finally make it to the very spot where the Venice Canals begins&#8211;which is one of my favorite places here in Los Angeles&#8211;not just its entrance; but the Venice Canals in its entirety, as we&#8217;ll be soon rolling out our brand new E-book.</p>
<p>Fortunately, I&#8217;m able to spend much of my quality and needed time at the beautiful Venice Canals as many times that I desire; but each time I do&#8211;I see something that piques my interest anew because I didn’t see it before and it also catches my attention as well. (To be frank I don&#8217;t think my interest in the Venice Canals will ever be satiated; but until that time, which may be never, as you can see and very soon purchase, I&#8217;m a happy camper in the way things presently are.)</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the Venice (Canals included) Walking Tour – Part 8:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/TL8-23r.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/TL8-23r.jpg" alt="" title="Page 40" width="542" height="437" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30094" /></a></p>

<p>Judging by how many more places I have on this tour, there will probably be at least three more articles before Travelin&#8217; Local&#8217;s Venice e-Book is completed. And by judging by the tremendous amount of feedback we&#8217;ve received, it will be our denouement&#8211;as well as being totally cool dudes&#8211;to use parlance I learned from the locals there, and the line from actor, Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli, in the movie, <a href="http://www.fu-manchu.com/morbidaj/spicoli.htm" target="_blank"><em>Fast Times at Ridgemount High</em></a>.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Camper alert! The new 35 acre Moro State Campground just opened in <a href="http://www.crystalcovestatepark.com/" target="_blank">Crystal Cove State Park</a> this month, providing 60 campsites overlooking the ocean above Pacific Coast Highway, including 200 parking spots for day visits. </p>
<p>Each campsite has an ocean view and half of the sites have hookups for water and electricity. I was there on a mid-day, during midweek recently, and definitely envied the comfortable and ensconced world of all of the happy campers. They had all the perfect spots at the perfect park.</p>
<p>Several months ago we brought you <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/crystal-cove-state-park-so-close-and-yet-so-far-from-the-city-2/">a visit to Crystal Cove</a>, first sharing with you the breathtaking views that range from its rugged wilderness to its pristine beach. The park is tucked between Newport and Laguna Beach&#8211;and straddles Pacific Coast Highway&#8211;so close to the urban world, and yet so beautifully removed. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/CCC.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/CCC.jpg" alt="" title="Moro State Campground " width="400" height="300" class="alignright size-full wp-image-29576" /></a>
<p>Three miles of lovely white sand, and 2400 acres of wilderness attracts scuba and skin divers, tide pool explorers, hikers, joggers, bikers and campers. </p>
<p>But now the park has outdone itself with the addition of this fifteen million dollar project upgrade.</p>
<p>As one pleased young mom who was camping with her family said, ”Now we can have this wonderful ocean view from our campsite, and walk to the beach morning and evenings for $50 a night.” </p>
<p>So, if this sounds like your venue, you might want to check the <a href="http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/Crystal_Cove_Sp_Moro_Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=CA&amp;parkId=123400" target="_blank">reservation information</a> and start dialing the reservation number, 1-800-444-parks now. Park officials suggest you make your camping reservations early, and they say the area will draw a thousand visitors a day. Although I must say when I was there it did not feel crowded, it has the same Crystal Cove hushed silence in a tranquil space that I can ever recall.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/CCC2.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/CCC2.jpg" alt="" title="Crystal Cove State Park" width="350" height="263" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-29579" /></a>
<p>The famed <a href="http://www.crystalcovebeachcottages.com/html/index.php" target="_blank">Crystal Cove Beach Cottages</a> are also available for reservations. Numerous films, including the popular <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaches_(film)" target="_blank">Beaches</a>, were shot here. Now you can choose between individual or dorm style rentals, in the restored 100 year old cottages here. It’s a gorgeous piece of California history preserved and available to be experienced and enjoyed. </p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.laguna-beach-info.com/rubys-shake-shack-crystal-cove.html" target="_blank"><b><i>Shake Shack</i></b></a><b><i>, </i></b>on the edge of the park has also been redone with a redwood deck. </p>
<p>This longtime Coast Highway tradition still has the same great date shakes everybody remembers, plus a new burger menu. <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/CCC3.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/CCC3.jpg" alt="" title="Shake Shack" width="350" height="342" class="alignright size-full wp-image-29583" /></a>Now owned by Ruby’s Diner, it&#8217;s an easy right swing off Pacific Coast Highway if you are headed South, or close by the trails if you are in the park. Just look for the bright yellow umbrellas.</p>
<p><b><i>Background on the New Moro Campground</i></b></p>
<p>The state has owned this land for 30 years. For years this site was known as the El Morro Village Trailer park. Five years ago, plans for the campground were activated and some 300 families had to move out of the mobile home park, after vigorously fighting the eviction.</p>
<p>In 2009, the budget crisis put the campground on hold; but last year the work started again. With the completion came, along with it came some 18,000 new native California plants, replacing many non-native plants, and clear water streams. It&#8217;s a new chapter, one worth your time.</a></p>

And on the other, from Jamboree Road, accessible to the Newport Harbor from the 405 or the 5 freeways&#8211;which then takes you to the bridge and the island. <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/NI.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/NI.jpg" alt="" title="Wheels and water really mean bikes and bikinis here!" width="400" height="256" class="alignright size-full wp-image-29213" /></a>The other end of Balboa Island, <a href="http://www.visitnewportbeach.com/listings/index.cfm?action=display&amp;listingID=113&amp;menuID=58&amp;hit=1">ferry</a> carries cars, bikes, and walk-ons that take you back in history to times of old time amusement parks. <p> </b><a href="http://www.thebluebeet.com/" target=_"blank"><b>The Blue Beet</b></a> in Newport comes complete with a serious martini bar and lots of funky old blues. It dates back to 1912! </p>
<p><a href="http://www.balboa-island.net/e4bp.htm" target=_"blank"><b>Not to miss is its Fourth of July Boat Parade </b>–</a> If you are around over the Fourth, one of the largest boat parades in the nation is free and all of the fun starts at 1 p.m. (Note – check for road closures and consider using the ferry with a bike). </p>
<p>Sample a few of Newport and Balboa’s many choices and we predict you’ll be back for another round anytime, and at a drop of a dime! </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently, one of my daughters was here visiting from the East Coast. I showed her all around Venice and she instantly fell in love with it and its distinct charm. Indeed, her exact words were: “This is where I want to live.”</p>
<p>And to be sure, she isn’t alone in her thoughts and desires. Venice is truly a distinct beach town, and not a day it seems doesn&#8217;t pass, without a new and stylish restaurant, boutique, or ultra-modern building being built or finished. </p>
<p>And because of its distinctiveness, its sublime Venice Canals, fresh air along with so much more, it truly is a one-of-a-kind place&#8211;which is why I keep going back.</p>
<p>When we last left our <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/venice-canals-included-walking-tour-part-5/" target="_blank">Venice (Canals Included) Walking Tour</a>, we were in Windward Circle, admiring the rich history and iconic architecture here.</p>
<p>Now, we&#8217;ll be making another stop before we plumb the intriguing beauty and admire the residential areas of Venice.</p>
<p>So, let’s get started:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/TL6-6z.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/TL6-6z.jpg" alt="" title="Page 28" width="566" height="433" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28738" /></a></p>

<p>To enjoy Parts 1-5, of the Venice (Canals included) Walking Tour, here are the links:</p>

<p>Although this tour totals a little over 4 miles in distance, it’s jammed packed with all things Venice, which is long enough for the mind, body and soul to absorb and to make you fall in love with this little place of paradise, to the point that you too will probably be saying that that&#8217;s &#8220;where you want to live.&#8221; </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>North of <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/ocean-beach-at-san-diego/" target="_blank">Ocean Beach</a>, and at the most southern tip of Mission Beach, is the world famous South Mission Beach.</p>
<p>At the left edge of this piece of paradise, is its long and unique jetty, extending thousands of yards, and one may walk it without too much trouble, because its well worn rocks and boulders are fairly close, and traversing it just requires paying attention.</p>
<p>To the right of the South Mission Jetty, the waves mostly break large to the right, making it one of the more exciting waves in the world to ride. But for those that don’t know the break, when it’s breaking large, you should paddle out next to the jetty to get to the breakers. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-4ba.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-4ba.jpg" alt="" title="South Mission Beach" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28226" /></a></p>
<p>Many a surfer has gotten hurt on a big day paddling out in the middle just to get pulled and then slammed against the foreboding jetty when the waves are large. </p>
<p>Another trick is that after you ride the larger and longer waves to the north, the best way to paddle back out is to literally walk back to the jetty again and start the process one more time.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-4bb.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-4bb.jpg" alt="" title="Swimming at South Mission Beach" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28227" /></a></p>
<p>Another little known fact about South Mission is that in less than an hour the surf can change from flat to 14 or more feet—so if you surf here you always have to be on guard.</p>
<p>Situated at the southernmost tip of Mission Beach, the area is tony, fun, and there’s always something to do here for everyone—catch some rays, go for a bike ride along the boardwalk, play some hoops or volleyball, or just enjoy the beach and its park. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-4bc.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-4bc.jpg" alt="" title="Volleyball at South Mission Beach" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28228" /></a></p>
<p>The greatest thing about most of San Diego&#8217;s beaches is that they’re easy to get to,there’s typically plenty of free parking, the people are friendly, and for all of you you horn dogs out there—the women are undeniably attractive.</p>
<p>If you surf, however, I must warn you that guys at South Mission have been surfing here for literally decades, and its localism is notorious. Be that as it may, show respect, let the more experienced surfers get the larger waves, and over time, prove your abilities.</p>
<p>There are plenty of hotels and other inns to stay in and around South Mission, so what’s your excuse for not experiencing a bit of paradise in Travelin’ Local’s backyard.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Just a few miles south of <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/tourmaline-canyon-surf-beach-a-longtime-san-diego-gem/" target="_blank">Tourmaline Beach</a>, lies the unassuming and laid-back area of San Diego&#8217;s—Pacific Beach.</p>
<p>Albeit, there’s always some new store, building and development that’s built in and around the area, one thing is for sure—Pacific Beach’s character and inviting waters never waiver to those that are its local beach lovers.</p>
<p>Above we can clearly see the famous PB Pier and its delicious aquatint water and waves from the coast. </p>
<p>Looking further to the north, we can see the beach’s coastline and beach extend all the way to the furthermost tip, and to the north of that would be Tourmaline. (You could actually paddle your way there, but why bother).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-3aa.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-3aa.jpg" alt="" title="Pacific Beach Pier" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28213" /></a></p>
<p>The beach is notoriously mellow—in its break, its inhabitants, and its reputation, so it’s not hard to see its allure for beach lovers year round.</p>
<p>In 1902, when <a href="http://www.welovepb.com/pbhistory.htm" target="_blank">Pacific Beach</a> was in its infancy, beach front lots measuring 25 usually sold in pairs for between $350 &#8211; $700; but if you wanted to live two to five blocks from the ocean, the prices started at $150. By 1950, the population of Pacific Beach reached 30,000, and the average home sold for $12,000. </p>
<p>Today, some of the very same homes sell for millions.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-3bb.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-3bb.jpg" alt="" title="North of Pacific Beach" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28214" /></a></p>
<p>It’s located just off Mission Blvd from either Grand or Geffner, and I used to surf here for years—among the many other fine San Diego Beaches.</p>
<p>Although typically a predictable beach break where there’s usually some surf&#8211;occasionally it awakes from its slumber and the entire beach becomes a surfer’s paradise—with the entire coastline breaking into circular, high, and endless lines of offshore ‘glassy” surf.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, even when the surf isn’t breaking here, PB has a particular draw unlike most other San Diego beach towns. The local’s are friendly, there’s always a cool pub, restaurant, or other attraction to go to; and the beach is always a cool place to hang and to catch some rays.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-3cc.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/TL5-3cc.jpg" alt="" title="Under the Pier" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28215" /></a></p>
<p>Its picturesque location and beach also hold true for its world famous Pier—routinely photographed, pictured, and traversed by all that pass by.</p>
<p>So the next time you&#8217;re visiting San Diego’s Pacific Beach, be sure to remember these 3 important tips:</p>
<ol>
<li>Have Fun</li>
<li>There’s always something to do in the area</li>
<li>Go for a swim, surf, or dip in the waters here, as its allure will always be something you’ll cherish and remember.</li>
</ol>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With just one steep declining street leading to its large parking lot, Tourmaline Surf Park Beach, is another one of the myriad of San Diego’s wonderful surfing beaches.</p>
<p>A tiny bit to the south of <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/windansea-californias-world-famous-beach/" target="_blank">Windansea Beach</a>, Tourmaline is a favorite for both both seasoned wave riders and the less experienced. Its rolling mellow waves and large beach, make it a favorite for mostly longboarders of all ages. </p>
<p>Although its waves are typically temperate, when a large swell hits the place, it explodes into a surfrers paradise. Indeed, that&#8217;s when the northern tip of Tourmaline creates waves that only the most seasoned surfers are able to navigate. </p>
<p>Surrounded by 75 foot cliffs which create its natural break, Tourmaline Beach, <a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071006/news_1m6memorial.html" target="_blank">in 1963</a>, became the first surfing park in the USA&#8211;which means that lifeguards don&#8217;t use blackball flags to reserve any area for swimmers because at Tourmaline Canyon Surf Beach, surfers are able to use the entire beach, year-round.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27aa.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27aa.jpg" alt="" title="Tourmaline Surf Park Memorial" width="570" height="402" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28130" /></a></p>
<p>With a small, dedicated group of locals looking out for it, Tourmaline Beach has seen several improvements over recent years.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27ad.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27ad.jpg" alt="" title="Tourmaline Bath House Mural" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28131" /></a></p>
<p>First, the mural on the public bathroom was revitalized, after that, a memorial bench honoring Skeeter Malcolm, a legendary local waterman who surfed throughout his life until his death in 1993, at age 70; and most recently, the installation of the “monument honors the past and present surfers at Tourmaline Canyon Surfing Park who have embraced its beach, surf and camaraderie.”</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27ab.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27ab.jpg" alt="" title="Pacific Pier off in the Distance" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28132" /></a></p>
<p>Raising money by selling dedication bricks, <a href="http://www.tourmalinetailgaterssurfingassociation.com/index.html" target="_blank">the Tourmaline Tailgaters Surfing Association</a> mission is:</p>
<blockquote><p>committed to the betterment of Tourmaline Canyon Surf Park and to the people who surf there. To that end, we have banded together to provide assistance in maintaining the park, offer help to member of the Tourmaline community who are in need and contribute to the social interaction between club members and the extended tribe of Tourmaline surfers</p>
</blockquote>
<p>To that end, they have also helped raise funds for several people who are faced with immediate and severe medical problems. Considering they&#8217;ve never been “formalized,” yet, the Tailgaters are doing great work.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27ac.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-27ac.jpg" alt="" title="Honey, watch out!!" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28133" /></a> </p>
<p>Lastly, we&#8217;ll leave you with this tag line from Tourmaline Beach&#8217;s monument,</p>
<blockquote><p>Surf Well, Spread Aloha, Share Waves Without Judgment</p>
</blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Over the last two years, we&#8217;ve featured many historical landmarks, including <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/cruzing-to-the-skinner-house-in-silver-lake/" target="_blank">buildings</a>, <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/the-monterey-trailer-park-a-place-in-los-angeles-where-time-is-forgotten/" target="_blank">a trailer park</a>, <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/the-pascual-marquez-family-cemetery-in-pacific-palisades/" target="_blank">a cemetery</a>, and <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/the-fascintating-history-of-the-first-jewish-cemetery-in-los-angeles/" target="_blank">monuments</a>; but this is the first shack to make the list.</p>
<p>Originally constructed in 1946 by <a href="http://divinesurfdesign.com/2009/12/surf-diary-8-surf-legend-woody-ekstrom/" target="_blank">Woody Ekstrom</a>, Fred Kenyon and Don Okey, this palm covered shack aka &quot; The Surf Shack at Windansea Beach&quot; was designated as a historical landmark by the <a href="http://www.sandiego.gov/planning/programs/historical/pdf/register.pdf#search=%22windansea%20site%3Asandiego.gov%20%22surf%20shack%22%22" target="_blank">San Diego Historical Resources Board</a> (PDF) on May 27, 1998.</p>
<p>Extending north of Palomar Avenue and south of Westbourne Street, Windansea Beach is a surfer&#8217;s paradise with winter waves as high as six to eight feet, if not frequently larger. Indeed, this Point Break, is one of the few beaches in the world where the waves resemble the larger Hawaiian North Shore surf.</p>
<p>To just walk the beach, hearing its waves crashing and feeling the cool ocean breeze makes for a fabulous day.</p>
<p>Within the vicinity of Windansea Beach there are various sections of reefs including Middles, Turtles, and Simmons, named after Bob Simmons (who died at the northern break in 1954), and Big Rock. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26a.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26a.jpg" alt="The Surf Shack at Windansea Beach" title="The Surf Shack at Windansea Beach" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28080" /></a></p>
<p>Windansea&#8217;s Beach contribution to the development of modern surfing as we know it, is stranger than fiction:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26b.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26b.jpg" alt="" title="Surrounded by cliffs" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28081" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s where <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wilson_Simmons" target="_blank">Bob Simmons</a>, who tragically died at the northern reef named after him posthumously, was the first person to develop resin and polyurethane in lieu of the extremely heavy balsa wood surfboards, changed the nature of surfboards forever.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26c.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26c.jpg" alt="" title="&quot;I just want to put my feet in, Dad.&quot;" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28082" /></a></p>
<p>It was home to the notorious <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Van_Artsdalen" target="_blank">Butch Van Artsdalen</a> (January 31, 1941 &#8211; July 18, 1979), a legendary surfer, a pioneer of surfing 25-foot waves at such North Shore locations as Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach; and tube riding in Hawaii during the early 1960-1970s. He was a member of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Kahanamoku" target="_blank">Duke Kahanamoku</a> Surf Team.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26d.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26d.jpg" alt="" title="Surfs up, Baby!!" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28083" /></a></p>
<p>But, beyond all these accomplishments,<em> he was the first surfer to ride Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, thought unsurfable</em>. The challenging waves of Oahu&#8217;s North Shore soon became Van Artsdalen&#8217;s home. He was among the first to master the powerful, hollow waves at Ehukai Beach known as the Banzai Pipeline. This, along with his reputation for riding switchfoot in the large surf at Waimea Bay, earned him the nickname &#8220;Mr. Pipeline.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26e.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26e.jpg" alt="" title="Beautiful Rocks" width="570" height="431" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28084" /></a></p>
<p><It's became the title of the book "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pump_House_Gang" target="_blank">The Pump House Gang</a>&#8221; a book by author, Tom Wolfe, chronicled the wild anti-establishment surfers, and its legendary surfers along with their wild antics.</p>
<p>Windansea served as home break to Pat Curren, Mike Diffenderfer, Chris O&#8217;Rourke, Joey Cabell, Mickey Munoz and Butch Van Artsdalen. Steve Pezman, former publisher of Surfer magazine and current publisher of The Surfer&#8217;s Journal, called Windansea locals in the early 1960s&#8211;&#8221;the heaviest surf crew ever.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26f.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26f.jpg" alt="" title="Let&#039;s go for a walk, Honey!" width="570" height="322" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28085" /></a></p>
<p>The Windansea Surf Club was founded by Chuck Hasley in 1962, and included members such as The Endless Summer star and first Vice President Mike Hynson, Skip Frye, Joey Cabell, Del Cannon, Mike Purpus and Rusty Miller, Andy Tyler, Tom Ortner, Brew Briggs, Chris O&#8217;Rourke, Richard Kenvin, Miko Fleming, Debbie Beacham, Peter King, Saxon Boucher, Karl Engstrom, Randy Lind, &#8220;Big Steve&#8221; Jones, Ian Rotgans, &#8220;Big George&#8221; Felactu &#038; Longboard Larry.</p>
<p>Many of these surfers were later to appear in the seminal surf movie of all time, Bruce Brown&#8217;s, &#8220;The Endless Summer.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26g.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TL4-26g.jpg" alt="" title="Let&#039;s take the stairs at Playa del Norte Street" width="570" height="378" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28086" /></a></p>
<p>Isn&#8217;t it time for a visit?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If the sound of the Beach Boys’ songs “Good Vibrations,” or “Surfin USA,” bring back a lot of good memories, it might be time to treat yourself to the surf world of Huntington Beach. </p>
<p>Just head down Pacific Coast Highway to Huntington and turn left on Main Street. Then take a left on Olive to make your first stop, the <a href="http://www.surfingmuseum.org/index1.html" target="_blank">International Surfing Museum</a> is now right in front of you.</p>
<p>Countless treasures and memories fill every square inch of the museum. Photos, postcards, letters, plaques, posters, trophies, books, guitars, and surfboards catalog all the good times.</a></p>
<p>There is even a mini-theatre with flat screen for viewing <a href="http://www.brucebrownfilms.com/" target="_blank">Bruce Brown’s classic surfing movie, Endless Summer</a>, and the camera that was used to shoot this ultimate classic surfing film. As the site indicates, “Endless Summer was the first serious cinematic link to the sport that clicked with a mass audience.”</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/HBSurf.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/HBSurf.jpg" alt="" title="Huntington Beach Pier" width="400" height="265" class="alignright size-full wp-image-27509" /></a>
<p>For me, the mellow lifestyle of surfers and the glorious sounds of the Beach Boys spelled perfection&#8211;but whatever your take on the world of surfing, if you surf, or just enjoy its vibe, the bottom line is that it’s just fun to prowl through the surf shops and stroll on the pier.</p>
<p>You can check out the <a href="http://www.hsssurf.com/shof/" target="_blank">Surfers’ Hall of Fame</a> with hand and footprints preserved on the sidewalk in front of<a href="http://www.hsssurf.com/" target="_blank"> Huntington Surf and Sport</a>, and enjoy a fish taco or giant burrito in one of the many restaurants lining Main Street. Or cross the street to <a href="http://www.dukeshuntington.com/" target="_blank">Dukes</a>, and pick up a little more history on the Father of the surf movement, Duke Kahanamoku.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/HBSurf1.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/HBSurf1.jpg" alt="" title="International Surfing Museum" width="350" height="263" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-27510" /></a>
<p>All around the area there are older, well preserved homes, replete with the numerous surfer digs with wetsuits hung out to dry and beach bikes nearby.</p>
<p>On the afternoon that I was there, the sidewalks were busy, but the mood was mellow as usual. A special time to visit would be March 26<sup>th</sup> and 27<sup>th</sup>, when the <a href="http://www.socalcarculture.com/Images/032611Beachcruisers.pdf">Woodies</a> come to town. </p>
<p>If you love the classic surfing car, the Woodies, then check out their <a href="http://www.woodiegoodies.com/#woodiecalendars" target="_blank">calender</a> .</p>
<p>And if you want to delve further into the surf culture, the University of California Irvine’s new <a href="http://www.uci.edu/features/2011/02/feature_surfing_110222.php" target="_blank">Surf Collection</a> at the Langson Library is an excellent choice. </p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.surfingmuseum.org/index1.html" target="_blank">International Surfing Museum</a> is open from 11 am – 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday; Noon – 5 pm, Monday through Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and Noon – 9 p.m on Tuesday&#8217;s.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After hopping on a beach cruiser I borrowed during my stay at the<a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/the-belamar-hotel-an-oasis-in-the-middle-of-los-angeles/" target="_blank"> Belamar Hotel</a>, just a hop, skip, and a jump from the hotel and at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard, is the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Beach_pier" target="_blank">Manhattan Beach Pier</a>, the oldest concrete pier on the West Coast, and recognized by the State as California Historic Landmark #1018.</p>
<p>Measuring 928-feet and dedicated on July 4<sup>th</sup>, 1920, the Manhattan Beach Pier was the brainchild of engineer A.L. Harris, who thought the idea of its circular end would result in less exposure and damage to the pier&#8217;s pilings by the waves.</p>
<p>That might be true, but for a layperson&#8217;s point of view, I admired the design and creativity of the Manhattan Beach&#8217;s circular end. Its uniqueness stands out.</p>
<p>The day I visited, I didn’t see any fisherman, but I know for a fact that <a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/%E2%80%9Cfishing-in-the-city%E2%80%9D/">fishing from a Pier</a> is both a fun and popular activity. In the video below, this gentleman caught a pretty big stingray from the Pier:</p>
<p><iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/WiCxczz9CTM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Visiting Manhattan Beach Pier is easy, but if you’re walking or biking there as I did, be prepared for a steep climb. As you can see in the photo below, Manhattan Beach Boulevard has a fairly decent incline.</p>
<p>In the rounded building at the end of the Pier sits the <a href="http://www.roundhouseaquarium.org/" target="_blank">Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium</a>, “a non-profit organization committed to fostering and promoting the public study of, and interest in, the oceans, tidelands and beaches of Southern California, the marine life therein, and the impact of human population on that environment.” </p>
<p>Open from 3:00pm to sunset Monday-Friday and 10:00am to sunset on Saturday and Sunday, paying a visit here while you&#8217;re at Manhattan Beach is a great way for you, and if you have kids, to see and appreciate our local marine life and the beauty of the Pacific Ocean.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14b.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14b.jpg" alt="Manhattan Beach Pier" title="Manhattan Beach Pier" width="570" height="275" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27269" /></a></p>
<p>Just as is the case with other older structures, over the years, the Pier has seen its ups and downs; but looking at it today, no one would know. </p>
<p>But, due to years of withstanding the sea&#8217;s punishing waves, by the mid 80s, the Pier was literally falling apart. In fact, in 1984, a 150-pound chunk of concrete fell on a jogger, paralyzing him for life.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14f.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14f.jpg" alt="" title="What a great view!" width="570" height="358" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27275" /></a></p>
<p>However, the final blow to the Manhattan Beach Pier, was the El Nino storms of 1988, when the height of the waves reached the top of the Pier itself. Starting in February, 1991 and completed on July 18, 1992, a complete restoration of the pier&#8217;s deck, the Roundhouse, and the lifeguard station was initiated and completed. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14c.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14c.jpg" alt="" title="Watch out for the steep access road" width="570" height="336" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27270" /></a></p>
<p>When walking along the Pier you get to enjoy the cool Pacific ocean breezes, the beautiful views of both the Pacific and Manhattan Beach.</p>
<p>To be sure, when walking along the pier be sure to look downward. Lining the Pier encased in bronze circles are the winners of the <a href="http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/ci_17444527" target="_blank">Manhattan Beach Open</a>, an annual volleyball tournament that is celebrating its 51<sup>st</sup> year in 2011. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14d.jpg"><img src="http://www.travelinlocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TL3-14d.jpg" alt="" title="Relaxing with a book" width="570" height="358" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27271" /></a></p>
<p>And don&#8217;t forget to bring a book. While I was there, I saw several people reading and relaxing along the Pier. </p>
<p>In addition, because the Strand bike path which extends from Santa Monica to Torrance, passes by here, it&#8217;s the perfect place for a relaxing ride. </p>
<p>There&#8217;s also a walking path next to the bike path as well, which makes for a nice sunny morning stroll.
<p>Lastly, for the more athletically inclined, Manhattan Beach is perfect for Volleyball or Surfing. Of course, if you just want to lie out and work on your tan, enjoy the beauty of the ocean or the local houses, that&#8217;s always an attractive option.<br />
