Since summer is officially upon us it means, among other things, that I keep finding more free movies and concerts to add to Travelin’ Local’s Free Concerts and Movie Calendar at the bottom of our Homepage.

Subsequent to yesterday’s publishing of our traditional Travelin’ Local’s Los Angeles Free Friday, if you’re still looking for more free things to do, especially if you live on the Westside of Los Angeles, here are two more events you can add, along with the growing list of free movies and concerts this summer:

Designed with families in mind, the Westside Kids Summer Movie Series over at the Westside Vineyard Christian Fellowship has started. If you like free movies, popcorn, and arts and crafts, then there every Wednesday night for the next nine weeks. The fun starts at 6:30pm with arts and crafts, followed by a raffle (yes, there’s a free giveaway), and then a movie starts at 7:00pm. So, if you haven’t added it to your calendar, be sure to always check ours below. And the address for the Westside Kids Summer Movie Series, is at 3838 S. Centinela Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90066.

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Marina del Rey Free Summer Concerts at Burton Chace Park will be hosting Classical Thursdays and Pop Saturdays, with performances including A Night at the Opera, Classical Thursday, featuring the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony. Its hard not to enjoy sitting under the stars, closing your eyes, and just letting the music flow. Or if pop music is more to your taste, then Saturday evenings might be a better choice for you. Better yet, both nights. The music starts at 7:00pm and if you don’t have a portable chair, don’t worry, you can rent one at the park.

For more free concert and movie information, here’s the most recent edition of Travelin’ Local’s 2010 Summertime Calendar:

The Majestic Crest Theatre, designed by architect, Arthur W. Hawes, has a long and unique history.

Originally built in 1940 to showcase live theatre, the Crest’s main benefactor was Frances Seymour Fonda, the second wife of Henry Fonda, and mother to Peter and Jane Fonda. Why Frances Fonda decided to build the theatre isn’t fully known, nonetheless, due to the onset of World War II and the need for the community to watch newsreels, the “UCLAN Theatre,” named after UCLA, was refitted as a single screen movie house to serve the community.

Interestingly, Frances Seymour Fonda committed suicide in 1950, and the news was kept from her daughter, Jane Fonda. Apparently, Ms. Fonda was only informed that her mother died of heart failure. Household newspaper and magazine subscriptions were canceled, and the staff and student body of Fonda’s high school were instructed not to discuss the incident.

Fonda was to learn the truth about her mom’s death, a few months later while leafing through a movie magazine in art class.

Over the years, the Majestic Crest has financially struggled. Although it’s located only a few blocks from the formerly ultra hip and thriving area of Westwood Village, the theatre never garnered the popularity that so many others did. Perhaps the slide in the village’s popularity also affected the Crest’s success which it rightfully deserves.

With only 500 seats, small by many standards, the Crest has been a somewhat popular location for movie premieres. In the 1970s, it was temporarily renamed the Metro, and its then owner, MGM, made some minor design changes. But when the Pacific Theatre chain took control of the Crest in 1985, it was renamed the Pacific Crest.

Afterward they initiated and forged a successful and long-standing partnership with Disney. The auditorium was reconfigured, the screen was brought forward, new curtains were put up, a new marquee was designed, and the wall Cyclorama was assembled.

Designed by theatre aficionado and architect, Joseph J. Musil, who also designed the El Capitan Theatre, today’s Majestic Crest is a theatre goers’ enchantment.

Inside the lobby there’s a wonderful tiled concession stand, and a ceiling that playfully uses mirrors which provides enough artistic temperament for both amusement and to provide a realistic perception that the entrance and interior is much larger than it really is.

On every wall inside the theatre, there’s hand painted murals that feature “real establishments from Westwood and Hollywood during the 1940s; Bill’s Chili was named after the theatre’s then-manager, and Rick’s was named for the construction manager.”

By 2002, sagging box office returns and an overzealous landowner almost brought an end to the magic. The cinema was in danger of being converted into an adult film venue, a swap meet site, or a church. In the face of these events, a single-screen theatre owner from the community, Robert Bucksbaum, purchased the building and arranged to take over theatre operations from Pacific in January 2003. Source: The Majestic Crest Theatre

Today, the Crest is fighting for its life. With competition from the Landmark Multiplex, which has first run movie exclusivity, and only a few blocks from the Crest, the Crest isn’t at the top of everyone’s movie house list.

What’s better, watching a movie in a cookie-cutter multiplex to maximize the corporation chain’s profits, or be able to enjoy the experience of a theatre that was built so that people could fully enjoy the entire movie viewing experience in a theatre which was designed specifically for that purpose—whatever the answer, my money is on the Majestic Crest.

Construction is a part of everyday life in most metropolitan areas, and Los Angeles is no exception.

From the road construction currently underway on Interstate 405, small to large neighborhood minor and major arterial streets being repaved,or large scale condo projects rising in the “Wilshire Corridor,” Los Angeles is changing with the times.

Although I’m a big proponent of restoration whenever possible, I’m practical enough to know that’s not always for the best.

The term is called—Progress.

New development and construction, make up for a large portion of Los Angeles’ changes. The picture below is a sizable new building project, that’s currently being built on Santa Monica Boulevard:

According to the construction manager, the long steel beams currently seen at the bottom of the huge pit, are being used to hold up the side-walls until the permanent “floor” can be put in. (In other words, they don’t want the ground to crumble, and the building next door to fall down),

Unseen is this photo is a temporary inclined driveway for the heavy machinery to get down there, which is how this large vehicle was able to navigate onto the property’s huge hole in the ground.

I find new construction fascinating, and by watching these construction laborers working away day after day, in the never ending quest build another building in the city, it always has me thinking and wondering:

“What will the new building look like? How big will it be? What’s it for?”

Well, with a little bit of research, I found out. This new mixed-use building, already dubbed “The Santa Monica Plaza,” will include approximately 63 apartment units, 11,200 sq ft of Retail/Restaurant space, and two levels of subterranean parking.

The Santa Monica Plaza Architectural Rendering

Designed by the firm of Killefer-Flammang, the Santa Monica Plaza’s construction started in 2009.

Its owned and operated by the Wiseman Development, “who specialize in residential development-including the development of low income projects, and the acquisition of commercial and residential real estate in West Los Angeles, Brentwood, and Hollywood.”

Based on this, the Santa Monica Plaza looks to be a new jewel for the Westside. When Travelin’ Local, we know that not all is old or celebrated yet, but we’re a city very much in flux.

As a fan of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri, on the Food Network—sometimes he finds, like I did, a hole-in-the wall and cool little neighborhood joint, that serves mouth-watering and sanguine comfort food in the form of hamburgers, hash browns and breakfast burritos, and much more.

Located in the busy art, business, civic, and residential neighborhood around West Los Angeles, a place that serves the kind of comfort food that you wish your mother did—is called Hearty Deli. As the name implies, its food is both hearty, deli-like and made from scratch; and its fresh and in-your-face authentic.

With a menu that includes Breakfast Burritos, Teriyaki Rice Plates, Reuben’s, Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, and many other food choices–it’s a dive that uses all fresh ingredients to feed your inner-need for both comfort and good eats.

This morning I was ravenous having had a long but rewarding evening meeting with clients. So what’s the solution for that I kept wondering after I had my morning coffee? A quick jaunt over to Hearty Deli to have their famous Breakfast Burrito—fresh eggs, cheese, ham, onion, spices, and green peppers all wrapped in a warm tortilla. Add a little hot sauce, and it’s the perfect breakfast.

Yes, the Breakfast Burrito above, looks as good as it tasted. Needless to say I don’t need to say anything more. The adage that a picture tells a thousand tales, definitely applied in this situation.

So, if you find yourself in West LA for breakfast or lunch, stop by. Oh, did I fail to mention that the prices are extremely reasonable? Here’s the address and phone number, but beware—Hearty Deli’s food is highly addictive:

If you’re looking for a place to kick back with the kids, play some sports, or enjoy the outdoors, check out Crestwood Hills Park. I did, this past beautiful Saturday morning.

Although it’s a little off the beaten path–it’s high up in the Brentwood Hills–it’s worth spending a little extra time to get there.

There’s a playground for younger members of the family

A baseball diamond, which, as you can see by in this picture, has multiple uses

Two basketball courts set in the cool shade, among the statuesque tall pines

And a picnic area, complete with barbeque grills

A few of the park’s neighbors even have steps leading from their property directly to the park. Although not the largest park I’ve seen in LA, it’s definitely high on my list of shady spots, to spend a warm sunny afternoon at.

Just the smell of its gorgeous pine trees would bring me back to Crestwood Hills Park. If you’d like more information about the various programs and classes available here, just head on up the hill during the facility’s hours of operations:

Monday – Friday: 10:00am to 5:00pm

Saturday: 12:00am to 4:00pm

Sunday: 12:00am to 4:00pm

Parks and Travelin’ Local are synonymous, because Southern California’s physical beauty is what keeps many of us here, and what beckons others to come here every single day.

The other day I was ravenous for a traditional breakfast. I didn’t have to go far to find a local restaurant with both hearty fare and food with a homemade taste. Located at the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. and Purdue, Dolores Restaurant is a hop, skip, and jump from the 405.

First opened in 1944, Dolores Restaurant and Bakery has provided traditional American cuisine for the Santa Monica-West Los Angeles area. Many Los Angelenos have eaten and dined here more than once. Dolores’ menu is wide ranging and continental including omelets, Italian fare, fried chicken, fish, corned beef, pastrami sandwiches, sirloin steak, and much.

This morning, I felt like having a hearty breakfast of eggs over easy:

And a large helping of pancakes:

My girlfriend wanted an early lunch of a luscious Hamburger and Fries:

Dolores Early History

Dolores was founded by Amanda and Ralph Stevens, who after owning various restaurants in different states moved to Los Angeles in 1944 and opened the Dolores drive-in restaurant in Hollywood.

There were many drive-in restaurants in Los Angeles during the mid 1940’s and Dolores fit right in. Then, in 1956 the Stevens’ son Robert and his wife Lucille moved to Los Angeles to help manage the newly leased Dolores Restaurant on Wilshire Blvd. and La Cienega in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was a hit with the local teenagers in the 40’s and 50’s with its carhops, Suzie Q’s and JJ Burgers became a staple in the community for the next thirty years.

These "good times" would soon end when in 1981 Dolores drive-in was forced to close down to make room for a high rise office building. The last of the remaining Dolores Restaurants is the one you see today located at 11407 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Los Angeles where the food and service are like they have never been before. Source: Dolores

If you want to enjoy your meal with free wifi, Dolores provides that also.

Travelin’ Local is as much about the old as the new, and having a meal of comfort food at Dolores is just what the doctor ordered.

As of 2002, two-thirds of children, 18 and under, who live in Los Angeles do not live within walking distance (which is defined as ¼ mile) of a public park, according to the study, No Place to Play, by the Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit conservation organization.

"From a public health perspective, the benefits of parks are clear," added Dr. Linda Rosenstock, Dean of the UCLA School of Public Health. "Children who live near parks are more likely to exercise, and kids who exercise are less likely to develop a wide range of preventable diseases. More parks help create healthier kids and a healthier community." Source: California, Report Highlights LA Park Needs (CA)

With nice wide elevated walkways and extremely stable railings, children of all ages, and physical challenges, can access the recreation areas and equipment. There’s even a wheelchair ramp at the other end of the playground.

Access to this cool digging shovel was from the sidewalk, so even the youngest toddlers can play and fill their truck with sand.

This little boy spent a long time first digging up the sand with the shovel on the left, raising it up the pole, dumping it on the surface, and then watched his truck being filled via the sand slide.

These three children were enjoying the shade while digging in the sand.

If you have children, it’s easy to picture them enjoying every minute of their time sliding down the slide or jumping on this sea horse.

Sand and sidewalk aren’t the only types of surfaces that surround the playground—they also use a soft, cushiony material designed to keep bumps and bruises to a minimum.

I was surprised—and very happy–to see the improvements at the Stoner Recreation Center; but even before, it was pretty good.

More on that in an upcoming blog post…………………..:)

I had a great time watching the kids, talking to a few of them and their parents; and enjoying a day at the park.

Will you be heading to the park with your kids? Or maybe your kids are grown like mine, and you just enjoy the park without the worries of watching your kids. Maybe you don’t have any but dig the outdoors.

Either way, Travelin’ Local continues to amaze and surprise me.

During the morning conference, I heard a discussion about DWP’s new watering restriction hours and in another, I listened intently about which current crops are now being grown.

What originally began as an open field which once only grew soy beans; today Ocean View Farms is the preeminent authority and haven for growing tomatoes in Los Angeles.

Presented by the esteemed tomato grower, Barbara Spencer, from the Windrose Farm in Paso Robles, it was an exciting class about tomato growing. She provided valuable tips, and how-to’s on her expertise. After giving a background on the various tomato plants she brought–both seedlings and plugs–she opened the floor for questions.

With an audience of over 50 aficionados, there was no shortage of questions–from how to deal with limited water access, how best to feed tomato plants, and the best ways to prune them.

Before the program started, I had a chance to walk through the various paths that intertwined through the garden plots.

Everyone has their own individual style for growing:

Mailboxes, scarecrows, flowers, vegetables, fruits, a chair to relax in, and various gardening paraphernalia decorated each plot.
