This does not surprise me one bit and people do it all the time, young and old a like. I recently went to the movies with an acquaintance and all they did was text their husband throughout the entire movie. I was like how old are you? Mind you this is a 30 something.

@Lance I think you're right; it isn't that common anymore. Oh, and spring is just around the corner...................:)

@Lisa Texting your kids is fine in my book, especially if you started the conversation. I am guilty of texting while having a casual conversation. It is a sign of the times, but not a good sign.

I do think this is the kind of world we live in now. I know my husband has a job that requires much phone time for him but I really hate it when I see a couple out and one of them is on the phone instead of paying attention to the person they're with. I do text in someone's presence but only if I'm texted first and that would generally be one of my kids and quick answer then the phone can be put away again.

Going along Tess' point - if I'm at work and someone stops at my desk - and my phone rings - I ignore the phone call to complete my conversation with the person I'm with. I consider that polite and common courtesy (although it's not all that common...)

Anyway - I'm dreaming of summer after seeing these pictures!

@Diane C. You know, that's true. I hadn't really thought about it like that. Several years ago, just at the advent of cell phones, I remember seeing a movie with a mother and a son riding in a car, both of them talking on their cell phones, but not to each other.

@Mike You're under arrest................:)

I don't even own a cell phone, but I see young people using them while they're visiting with friends. They all seem to be fine with it though, which I find interesting. I don't know why voice mail isn't used more.

@Tom Consider yourself signed up..................:)

@Tess I'm with you on the texting and talking on the phone. What I hate just as much is when I'm talking to a friend, and they put me on hold because another call comes in.

LIsa,
This is crazy! I am 55 and may seem a little out of it but I think answering your phone when you're out with a friend or friends is rude! I had a friend over for lunch and her phone rang and she answered it. Rude. Texting in a sandbox. Please!

What ever happened to respect and manners for young and old!
The only reason I can think of answering or texting when you are with others on free time is if you have young children and it's the child care people calling. I call that important. Everything else can wait. That's why we have voice mail!
