On Monday, Travelin’ Local covered the new Gold Line Foothill Extension, which included both the groundbreaking and sign unveiling ceremony. It actually took place at a very interesting, and historically significant location—at the old Santa Fe Depot in Monrovia.

Located near the intersection of West Duarte Rd. and South Myrtle Ave., this historic old Depot will play a major part in the growth of the City of Monrovia, as a transit hub and Metro Stop for the Foothill Gold Line Extension.

Frequently buildings serve as architect’s blank canvases. And from the Train Depot’s picture above, it’s easy to visualize the potential this building has. Many years of its neglect have taken their wear and toll, but with a little loving care, this old building can and will be restored to its previous glory of by gone years.

Originally built in 1926, the Monrovia Santa Fe Depot saw thousands and thousands of people pass through its gates. As the idea and reality, of a Los Angeles County wide mass transportation system is taking hold, this stucco and concrete depot at Monrovia–although deserted and vandalized for dozens of years—has sparked its revitalization. And with all of Metro’s talented people involved, the ability to transform this “old building” into something even more meaningful for its citizens, will be exciting to see.

Old

The Monrovia Santa Fe station was one of a series of unique mission style depots built along the Santa Fe Railroad, in Southern California. However, the Monrovia station was left to decay since its closure in 1972.

Details

Although none of the original building is habitable, small details of what the building once resembled, still remains. Indeed, its textures and inherent beauty of line, and form, hold true even in its current condition.

In a few years, I look forward to going back and photographing the totally rejuvenated Monrovia Train Depot. Until then, I hope that you’ve enjoyed the feel and look of history in the making.
